Capital Region – Discover nature, culture and cycling routes

Capital Region: The Royal North Zealand National Park has designated hiking and cycling routes through varied landscapes. Along the national park’s coast, there are opportunities for sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Lake Arresø is a protected bird area where white-tailed eagles or ospreys can be observed.

Nature

A boat trip travels from the Fredensborg side of Lake Esrum to a forest café near Dronningens Bøge. The garden of Fredensborg Palace combines the formal Baroque design of the 18th century with wooded areas and lakes in a more romantic landscape. Seven avenues radiate from Fredensborg Palace, and the main garden is open to the public all year round. Frederiksborg Palace stands on three islands surrounded by a lake and gardens.

Routes

The Castle Route, also known as Route 48, is a cycling tour of approximately 75 kilometres with a moderate level of difficulty. The Tisvilde Trail is approximately 70 kilometres long and runs through the Royal North Zealand National Park with deep forests, open fields and lakes. It begins at Esrum Abbey and ends in Tisvildeleje.

The Harbour Circle is an approximately 13-kilometre walking and cycling route around Copenhagen Harbour. It can be walked or cycled in sections of 2, 4 or 7 kilometres. The Bicycle Snake is a curved cycling bridge over Copenhagen Harbour.

History

The par force hunting landscape in North Zealand preserves a grid of hunting avenues, numbered stone posts and hunting lodges. The ruins of Søborg Castle were once among Denmark’s strongest medieval fortresses. Amalienborg consists of four separate Rococo palaces around a square; two of them are open to the public. Amalienborg offers the changing of the guard every day at 12 noon.

Hammershus is the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe. The Hammershus visitor centre offers panoramic views of the castle and an exhibition about its history.

Culture

Bornholm’s landscape has more than 230 kilometres of signposted cycling routes. There are two mountain-bike routes in Almindingen on Bornholm. Sea-kayaking tours are offered on Bornholm along the varied coast and to the skerries on the east coast. Bornholm has been recognised as a World Craft Region.

Rønne Theatre has been in daily use since 1823. The theatrical tradition of Rønne Theatre includes dialect comedies and plays written and performed in Bornholm’s original language. Hjorths Fabrik is a ceramics museum; traditional methods are still used in the old workshops.

Grønt Marked is a regular, non-profit food and cultural market held at various locations in Copenhagen. Ferry services to Rønne operate, among other places, from Ystad and Køge.
