Hillerød: Castle, Gardens and Historic Trails

Frederiksborg Castle and the history of the town

Frederiksborg Castle houses the National History Museum with Denmark’s National Portrait Gallery. Frederiksborg Castle Church is part of a visit to Frederiksborg Castle. The gardens are also part of the castle complex: Frederiksborg Castle Gardens consist of the Baroque Garden and the Landscape Garden, two distinct garden areas. The gardens are also laid out on four terraces that slope down towards Lake Slotssøen.

The Hillerød Town Museum offers further insights into history. It tells the story of Hillerød from the medieval village to the present day. The presentation is designed so that visitors can see, touch and explore history in a playful way. Annaborg, which was built in 1782–1783 by district official FC Brammer, is home to the Hillerød Art Association.

There is a 1.5-kilometre historical walking tour through the town centre, exploring the town’s history. Fifteen signs at selected buildings and locations provide information about Hillerød. “In the footsteps of the Resistance Movement” offers a different approach to contemporary history: a digital walking tour through the town centre with stories from the occupation period. The tour takes approximately 1.5 hours and covers about 4 kilometres.

Gardens, lake and cultural landscape

Near Hillerød, there is an information point at the entrance to Store Dyrehave, offering nature and cultural experiences. Near Hillerød, Store Dyrehave is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Par force hunting landscape in North Zealand.

On Lake Slotssøen, Den Lille Færge M/F Frederiksborg offers sightseeing cruises. During a cruise, you can see Frederiksborg Castle and the Baroque Garden from the lakeside. This allows the castle, garden and lake to be viewed from a different perspective without separating these themes from one another.

Arrival and cycling routes as selection criteria

Frederiksborg can be reached by train to Hillerød Station and then on foot in approximately 15 minutes. Bus routes 301 and 302 from Hillerød Station stop in the immediate vicinity of Frederiksborg Castle and the museum. When choosing your accommodation, these documented routes and the different areas of interest can provide practical guidance.

“Royal Trails” is a 12-kilometre cycling tour starting in Hillerød, passing through the par force hunting landscape and by the compass stone in Store Dyrehave. Cykelrute 32 is 26 kilometres long and marked throughout with blue cycling route sign no. 32. Cykelrute 33 is a signposted 27-kilometre cycling route from Gilleleje Station to Frederiksborg Castle; it runs through Gribskov and Hillerød. The different distances can help you narrow down the focus you want for your stay.
