Hillerød Municipality: Castle, Lakes and Trails

Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød Municipality houses the National History Museum and Denmark’s National Portrait Gallery. A visit includes the castle church, the Great Hall, the Audience Chamber, the state rooms and richly furnished rooms. The castle is surrounded by lakes and a castle park with a Baroque garden, Badstueslot and an idyllic landscaped garden.

Culture and History

The Turbine Hall at Elværket Hillerød houses exhibitions focusing on archaeology as well as the culture and history of North Zealand. Elværket Hillerød also offers a family-friendly exhibition of historical finds and an archaeology activity where children can excavate a grave.

The self-guided historical town walk in Hillerød follows a 1.5 km route through the historic old town. It includes 15 historical signs at selected buildings and squares near Frederiksborg Castle; the signs are available in Danish and English.

Store Dyrehave was a royal forest used for hunting and horse breeding. A stone wall kept red deer and horses inside. The area can be explored on foot or by bicycle via its star-shaped network of paths, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Par force hunting landscape in North Zealand.

The municipality also includes the nearby towns of Skævinge Municipality and Gørløse.

Nature

Hillerød Municipality is one of five municipalities in Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park. Near Hillerød, there is a national park information point at the entrance to Store Dyrehave. The southern parts of Gribskov and Store Dyrehave are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Esrum Lake is one of the large lakes in Hillerød Municipality.

Three marked exercise routes run through Store Dyrehave, with lengths of 6.2 km, 10 km and 21.1 km. The 10 km route has picnic, fire and barbecue areas, toilets, and wheelchair- and pram-friendly paths. The blue mountain bike trail is 23 km long and can be extended by a further 9 km in Tokkekøb Hegn via its southern section. The different route lengths can be compared when planning your day.

The 3.5 km Kulsvierstien trail near Hillerød leads through the varied landscape of North Zealand, with hills and small lakes, as well as through a hilly dead-ice landscape. It offers views of Alsønderup Engsø.

Getting Around

The S-train runs directly from central stations in Copenhagen to Hillerød Station. From there, Frederiksborg Castle can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the path along Slotssøen or via Slotsgade; the walk takes approximately 15 minutes. Bus routes 301 and 302 run from Hillerød Station to a stop near Frederiksborg Castle and the museum. Hillerød Station is approximately 800 metres from the car park on Overdrevsvej for Store Dyrehave.

Gillelejestien, also Route 33, is a 27 km marked cycle route from Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød to Gilleleje Station.

Water

The unmarked Søstien follows an approximately 2.4 km circular route around Slotssøen, through the castle and castle gardens, offering beautiful views of Frederiksborg Castle along the way. Along Søstien at Posen, there is a children’s playground inspired by Hillerød’s history, as well as public toilets.

At Teglgårdssøen in Hillerød, there is a bathing area with a small sandy beach and bathing jetty. A footpath leads around the lake, and there is also an access path to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Par force hunting landscape in Store Dyrehave.

Agriculture and Dining

The organic farm Mangholm has a café, a farm shop and a restaurant open at weekends.
