Rudersdal Municipality between coast, lakes and glacial landscapes

Rudersdal Municipality combines the Øresund Coast with a varied inland landscape. Ridges, undulating dead-ice landscapes and meltwater valleys shape the region; they formed between 20,000 and 16,000 years ago. Along the coast, steep coastal slopes are part of the landscape. A prominent landmark inland is Landsebakken: the short terminal moraine hill lies 68 metres above sea level and rises steeply 15 to 20 metres above its surroundings.

Nature experiences between Rude Skov and Vaserne

Rude Skov offers various options for active days. A marked, 10-kilometre blue MTB route leads through technically challenging terrain with many metres of elevation gain. A hiking route marked with yellow dots can be shortened or extended via other roads and paths. The Rude Skov Rundt route also has tent and fire sites. An accessible route runs around Ebberøddam and Blegmandsmosen. Rude Skov can be reached by bus 354 from Holte Station and bus 197 from Birkerød Station.

Vaserne represents a different landscape focus. The 135-hectare protected area comprises lake, marsh and swamp-forest areas and is home to more than 180 different bird species. A bird tower has a long ramp leading to the lower level for wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties. Along Chr. Winthers Sti, an approximately 12-metre-long birdwatching bridge provides views of the birdlife on the lake and at the edge of the reeds. The route described also includes a 503-metre-long wooden bridge with tables and benches that is easily accessible by wheelchair.

Routes for walks, bike rides and culture

KulturSlangen is an approximately 32-kilometre-long route from Næsseslottet on Furesøen to Vedbæk Harbour and the Øresund. It connects nature, art and history. The continuous route passes through residential neighbourhoods and urban areas and can be started at any point. In addition, it includes six shorter routes ranging from 3 to 9 kilometres in length. The FamilieRuten is 21.5 kilometres long in total, signposted and suitable for walking or cycling. For shorter walks, the 4.5-kilometre Vedbækturen is a good option; it branches off from KulturSlangen and passes old country houses, the area around Enrum Dam and Vedbæk Church.

Between Nærum and Vedbæk, Grisestien follows a former railway line. The tracks were removed in 1923; today, a nature trail runs along the route. A tour through Vedbæk and Vedbæk Maglemose leads to settlement sites from the Mesolithic period and shows traces of natural climate changes in the landscape. For orientation, the routes of varying lengths can provide a useful guide when you want to combine walks, bike rides and culture along the way.

Historic places and art

Mothsgården is Denmark’s oldest surviving country estate. The permanent exhibition covers the history of the Rudersdal region over a period of 1,000 years. Mothsgården is also a good starting point for walks in Kirkeskoven or by Søllerød Sø. Gl. Holtegaard serves as an art gallery with changing exhibitions of modern and older art. The grounds include a sculpture park in the historic Baroque garden; classical concerts, lectures and events are also held there. Café Alma serves coffee, lunch and wine and focuses on organic and seasonal ingredients as well as local producers.

The Øresund and the waterfront towns

Skodsborg Strandpark has an accessible bathing jetty facility that can be used year-round. At Vedbæk Harbour, there are opportunities for sailing and swimming in the Øresund. Vedbæk Nordstrand has exercise equipment, a playground and bathing jetties; Vedbæk Sydstrand has beach volleyball courts, a fitness area and a sandbox with a wooden ship and play equipment. When choosing accommodation in Rudersdal Municipality, it can therefore be crucial whether you want to focus on coastal landscapes, nature trails, cultural sites or activities on the water.
