Skodsborg on the Coast: Beach, Nature and Spa History

Skodsborg is a coastal town for travellers who want to combine beaches, nature and an unusually rich spa history. Skodsborg Beach Park lies as a long, narrow park between Strandvejen and the coast and offers direct access to the water. Its narrow sandy beach measures 300 metres in length and 25 metres in width. Jakob Carl Ottosen founded it together with his wife, following an American model. At Skodsborg Strandvej 139, a bust of Carl Ottosen stands in the garden in front of the spa hotel, commemorating the founder of Skodsborg Badesanatorium. Frederik VII’s Grotto is also part of the town’s history. It was built the year after Frederik VII purchased Skodsborg Palæ and was used by him on festive occasions. The grotto was placed under protection in 1950. Villa Rex was added to the accommodation facilities in 1858; the monarch frequently held council meetings there. Along Strandvejen, there are also large, well-preserved villas that form the distinctive Strandvejen milieu. At Skodsborg Strandvej near Skodsborgbakken, a memorial stone commemorates resistance fighter Ib Mogens Gundelach.
