Asserbo: Forest, Ruins and Active Days Out

Around Asserbo, forest paths, traces of history and active excursions take center stage. Asserbo Plantage, Tisvilde Hegn and the Asserbo Castle Ruins offer specific points of interest for a range of interests: hiking, cycling, golf and experiencing historic sites all shape the options for a stay.

Forest, Sand and Regional Trails

Asserbo Plantage is part of a large, continuous plantation complex comprising Tisvilde Hegn, Melby Overdrev and Liseleje Plantage. Its many pine trees provide shade and hold the sand in place. In the past, the area was affected by drifting sand. At the same time, regional cycle route 47, Nordkyststien, runs through Asserbo. For cyclists, it provides a clearly defined route through the area. The former drifting sand is part of the history of today’s woodland.

Hiking and Activities Around the Castle Ruins

Asserbo can also be explored on foot along a variety of routes. The hike in Tisvilde Hegn begins at the car park by the Asserbo Castle Ruins and is 5 or 7 km long. Starting at the ruins connects the hike with a historic destination before the route continues into the forest. Yellow-marked routes start at the Asserbo Castle Ruins and pass many sights in the forest. Asserbo is also a starting point for activity routes with exercise shelters.

A Break at Lynghytten

Lynghytten is a destination in its own right. It is located along the 1.9 km-long Sundhedssporet and is open to everyone. The 1.9 km-long Sundhedssporet forms a separate section of trail, with Lynghytten serving as a place to take a break. There, you can rest, eat a meal you have brought with you and read about nature on the signs. For a tour where taking a break is just as important as being active, this combination is particularly appealing.

Asserbo Monastery and Castle Ruins

Asserbo Monastery was founded by Bishop Absalon in the 12th century. The Asserbo Castle Ruins lie among the trees in Tisvilde Hegn. Their surviving walls and moat now form an idyllic place for visitors. Visitors can cross the bridge over the moat to reach the small island of the Asserbo Castle Ruins and walk around the former castle. For those interested in culture, the site combines the history of the monastery with the surviving remains of the former castle.

Golf with Different Playing Options

Golf enthusiasts also have two clearly distinct options. Members of Danish and foreign golf clubs are welcome at Asserbo Golf Club as green fee guests. Guests without a playing handicap can use Asserbo Golf Club’s pay-and-play par-3 course.

Through the Forest to Troldeskoven

If you walk through Asserbo Plantage towards Tisvildeleje and continue through Tisvilde Hegn, you will pass through Troldeskoven. The forest lies directly behind the line of coastal dunes.
