Vellerup – Fjord Trails, Beach and Nature

Vellerup brings together fjord shores, nature trails, a pebble beach and woodland in a compact landscape. Vellerup Vig, Egholm Forest and the beginning of Gudernes Stræde offer different ways to enjoy hiking days, bike rides and experiences by the water.

Hiking and Cycling Along the Fjords

Gudernes Stræde is a 64-kilometre hiking trail from Vellerup Vig on the Isefjord to Mosede Fort on Køge Bay. The route passes through landscapes of natural and cultural history. The starting point at Vellerup Vig can be reached by bus to Vellerup or by car, with parking available at Vellerup Church. The 64-kilometre distance means that planning a hike requires setting aside a specific amount of time. Alongside the opportunity for outdoor exercise, the landscapes of natural and cultural history give the route a historical dimension.

Fjordstien is a nature trail along Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord for cyclists and pedestrians. It often runs close to the water and leads from Hundested via Frederikssund and Jyllinge to Roskilde and on to Holbæk. The nature trail combines proximity to the water with use by cyclists and pedestrians. Unlike Gudernes Stræde, it explicitly includes cycling as well as hiking. From Hundested to Holbæk, several fjord towns alternate along the route.

Vellerup Vig and Beaches in the Surrounding Area

Vellerup Vig has a two- to three-metre-wide pebble beach. At Vellerup-Vig-Strand, there are a few parking spaces approximately 200 metres from the beach. Its limited width and stony surface give this stretch of shore a different character from a broad sandy beach. Planning a visit to the beach therefore involves not only its location by the fjord but also the nature of the shoreline. Those spending time by the water at the inlet will find a narrow shore with a pebble beach and limited parking.

Solbakken Naturistcamping beach is located in the immediate vicinity of Vellerup. Rønø is an island in the immediate vicinity of Vellerup. Kisserup Strand is a beach in the surrounding area of Vellerup.

Egholm Forest and a Distinctive Landscape Detail

Egholm Forest stretches for 3 kilometres from Egholm Castle to Vellerup Vig. Dogs may be walked in Egholm Forest provided they are kept on a leash at all times. The three-kilometre length provides a specific sense of scale for a walk. Dogs must be kept on a leash throughout; this also applies on a longer route through the forest. The forest therefore offers a different setting from the open pebble beach and the waterside route of Fjordstien.

Sandhøj is a 3 × 15 m grassy hill on a field, slightly worn away at the base. The hill's shape, its vegetation and its position on agricultural land distinguish it from the surrounding paths, shores and woodland areas.
