Helsingør between World Heritage, shipyard and water

Culture

Kronborg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Helsingør. William Shakespeare used Kronborg as the setting for his famous play “Hamlet”, in which the castle became Elsinore Castle. At Kronborg, you can explore the casemates of Holger Danske, up to the cannon tower with views over the Øresund. Kronborg also offers a 15-minute introduction to its stories, exhibitions and kings.

The Helsingør City Museum presents exhibitions on Helsingør’s 600-year history. The museum also sells two self-guided city walks, allowing you to explore stories on location in the city. The family activity “Historiejagten – Helsingør” takes you to four places in Helsingør and includes written instructions, clues and tasks.

History

The Værftsmuseet is located in the historic shipyard district and tells the story of 100 years of Helsingør Værft, the city’s largest employer. In a workshop area, you can try out various metal tools. The exhibition “Et skib bliver bygget” follows shipbuilding from the signing of the contract to the completion of the ship. A free tour with images and sound leads through ten locations in the historic shipyard district.

Skibsklarerergaarden is a well-preserved merchant’s and ship broker’s house from the Sound Dues era, which has remained largely unchanged since the 1780s. The museum is brought to life through people in historical costumes, historical activities and tastings; it is open according to the programme and during school holidays. The Skibsklarerergaarden boutique offers, among other things, liquorice root, coffee, wine and beer.

Seafaring

The M/S Museet for Søfart is located underground in an old dry dock from 1955. It conveys maritime history through exhibitions, books, guided tours and educational programmes. Since 1915, the museum has told the story of Denmark as one of the world’s leading maritime nations.

Routes and orientation

Helsingør Visitor Service is located just a few minutes’ walk from Helsingør railway station. It offers local advice on culture, history, nature, events and family activities.

The Elsinore Walk cultural walk is marked by 750 blue dots, each placed five metres apart. The Elsinore Walk is suitable for wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties when the alternative routes marked in the accompanying brochure are used. For planning purposes, the marked walk and the cycling routes can be compared as different forms of mobility.

Several cycling routes in and around Helsingør pass through beautiful nature, historic attractions and maritime environments. In Helsingør Municipality, additional cycling routes lead to the favourite places of local writers in the northern and southern parts of the municipality.

Events

Kulturværftet hosts concerts, theatre performances, lectures and other major events. “Historiens Dag” is a recurring autumn event with free events about the history of Helsingør.
