Castle, Old Town and Sound Dues

Kronborg is an outstanding Renaissance castle and the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Visitors can walk through the grand halls and climb the tower to enjoy the view across the Øresund. From Helsingør railway station, Kronborg can be reached in ten minutes on foot along the harbour.

Helsingør’s historic old town includes many well-preserved historic houses and lanes. Skibsklarerergaarden offers another way to explore the city’s history: it is considered Denmark’s best-preserved merchant’s and ship chandler’s yard from the era of the Sound Dues. The provisions shop features original interior furnishings from 1809. The shop’s original furnishings make the yard’s former function readable within the space itself and anchor its historical context in a preserved detail. People in historical clothing, historic activities and tastings bring the site vividly to life. The focus in the yard is therefore not only on the buildings themselves, but also on the trading history connected with Helsingør’s location on the Sound.

Shipyard History to See and Experience

Værftsmuseet tells the story of 100 years of Helsingør Værft, once the city’s largest employer. In the Garage workshop area, visitors can try out various metalworking tools. Anyone interested in industrial and urban history can explore the former everyday life of the shipyard there through specific objects.

The museum also offers a tour of the historic shipyard area, during which you can use images and audio recordings on your phone. The museum visit is therefore not limited to a single exhibition room: the former shipyard area itself becomes the setting for the exploration. Images and sounds accompany the route and place the historic site at the centre.

Øresund Aquarium and Experiences by the Water

The Øresund Aquarium is the place to go for experiences in nature and by the water. It features touch pools, biotope aquariums and themed aquariums. The animals are fed every day; in the children’s touch pool, visitors are allowed to help with the feeding. This means there are both pools for observing different habitats and an opportunity to take part directly in a feeding.

The Øresund Aquarium also offers sea safaris departing from Helsingør. Depending on your interests, you can thus extend your view of the water from the aquarium to an activity on the Øresund. Beaches near the historic buildings complement this combination of town and coast. Helsingør is therefore well suited to days focused on historic houses and lanes, maritime history or experiences on the water.
