Kemnitz: Hotels and Accommodations

In Kemnitz, thatched-roof houses dating from the 18th century and a large village pond line a street. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route runs from Greifswald through the surrounding area to Kemnitz-Loissin.

Geographical Location

Kemnitz is a municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Church and History

The Church of the Holy Cross in Kemnitz was built around 1300 under the patronage of Eldena Abbey. Over the course of its history, it was repeatedly severely damaged. In 1743, Andreas Mayer, an architect at the University of Greifswald, redesigned the church.

The church tower was added in 1841 and is designed in the Neo-Gothic style; its four corners feature four small turrets. The church is a listed monument. Andreas Mayer designed the surviving pulpit altar, which is a prominent element of the interior furnishings.

A small exhibition about the painter Friedrich August von Klinkowström is located in the rectory next to the church. The church key is available from the Kemnitz parish office.

Cycle Paths and Routes

On the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, it is 5.5 kilometers to Kemnitz and 18 kilometers to Lubmin. The section toward Kemnitz and Loissin uses a well-developed cycle path.

The themed cycle route “Route of Northern German Romanticism” runs from Greifswald to Wolgast and leads to places associated with Friedrich August von Klinkowström.
