Syddjurs Municipality between Coast, Nature and Culture
Coast, Hilly Landscapes and Nature Experiences
Syddjurs Municipality combines a long coastline with protected landscapes, hiking trails and distinctive cultural sites. The municipality has 137 km of coastline. In Mols Bjerge National Park, dry nutrient-poor grasslands and heathlands, ancient broadleaf forests and open beaches shaped by Ice Age glaciers come together. The hills reach heights of up to 137 m and provide the basis for numerous hikes and viewpoints. The national park also combines rich biodiversity with an extensive cultural heritage, including burial mounds, a castle ruin and dolmens.
Hiking Trails of Various Lengths
For active days, the Mols Bjerge Trail provides a clear framework: the 80 km hiking trail is divided into four daily stages and passes natural and cultural-historical attractions. The national park also has 35 shorter routes through areas of interesting landscapes, returning to their starting point with a car park. If you are planning a hike that returns to the starting point, you can use bus route 123 for this purpose.
Shorter trails also lead to special sites. The 4.5 km Oldtidsstien runs through the northwestern part of Ringelmose Skov and begins and ends at Bregnet Church. Along the way, you pass a long barrow, six dolmens, several burial mounds, a ford and a sacred spring. The Kløversti in Ebeltoft consists of four routes totalling around 27 km around the town and through the surrounding landscape. There are also hiking trails on the grounds of the Molslaboratoriet.
History, Museums and Maritime Culture
Kalø Castle was built in 1313 by Erik Menved; its ruin can be reached via Denmark's oldest medieval road. The ruin contains a staircase with a viewing platform. In Ebeltoft, the Museum Østjylland is located in the town hall, with exhibitions and activities for adults and children open all year round. The Renaissance castle Rosenholm, dating from 1559, and its associated castle park offer an insight into the life of a noble family in historic Denmark.
The frigate Jylland also offers a focus of its own: it is the longest wooden ship in the world and now serves as a museum about its own history, from warship to royal ship. Glas – Museet for glaskunst presents modern international glass art and has an active glass workshop as well as a creative workshop for visitors. At Sletterhage Fyr lighthouse, you can climb the tower and visit an exhibition.
Cycling and Water Along the Coast
Mols Bjerge National Park has a well-developed network of cycle paths, gravel roads through natural areas and quieter roads along the coast and through small villages. The Helgenæs route is approximately 20 km long and follows small asphalt roads with little traffic through varied terrain with flat sections and inclines.
Many sections of the coast around Syddjursland have calm, coastal waters that are well suited to kayaking; there are also overnight sites for kayakers along the coast. In summer, Mols Bjerge National Park offers guided snorkelling tours at designated coastal sites.
