Kolindsund and birdlife
Kolindsund stretches from Grenaa in the east to Kolind in the west. The area traversed by the âKolindsundâ route is important for agriculture, nature and wildlife. Up to 100 different bird species stay in the Sund year-round; specific sightings may vary by season.
A bird tower north of Kolind offers views of the nearby meadows. In late summer, flocks of starlings fly over the Sund near Kolind, forming âSort Solâ. The timing and size of the flocks vary. Thus, the year-round birdlife and the seasonal spectacle offer different experiences depending on when you are interested in nature watching.
You can fish for sea trout, pike, coarse fish, rainbow trout and bream in the Kolindsund canals; check local regulations before fishing. The gravel paths along the canals offer opportunities for a bike ride. This gives you a choice of different activities in the same landscape: fishing by the water or cycling along the canal paths.
Culture and history
Romle Stenovn is a well-preserved Neolithic round dolmen. It lies at the northern end of a peninsula on the south side of Kolindsund. The âKolind Rundtâ route has information about Romle Stenovn, so the circuit also connects with the townâs archaeological history.
Kolind Church was built in 1919 on the foundations of a medieval church. The original church was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. The date of construction, 1919, is thus distinct from that of the older Romanesque predecessor church. The âKolind-stenâ is a granite runestone.
The Midtdjurs Local Archive is located in Kolind+ and helps visitors search for archival material. Exploring history here can therefore encompass archaeological and ecclesiastical subjects as well as a search for archival material.
