Central Jutland between Mols Bjerge, museums and lakes

In Central Jutland, Mols Bjerge National Park offers opportunities for hiking, water sports, cycling, birdwatching, walking dogs and horse riding. The main car parks providing access include Strandkær Strand, Femmøller Efterskole, Knebel Plantage and Agri Bavnehøj. Bus route 123 runs from Aarhus via Rønde to Ebeltoft and also stops at the ruins of Kalø Castle.

Nature and trails

The Mols Bjerge Trail consists of four daily stages of around 20 kilometres each between Rønde and Ebeltoft. The starting and ending points of the four stages are connected by bus route 123. Many hiking trails in Mols Bjerge National Park pass through enclosures with grazing animals that help restore natural habitats.

There has been a mill by the stream at Ørnbjerg since the 16th century; the present building dates from 1833. A route marked with yellow dots leads from the mill along the stream to Stubbe Sø. At the mill, there is an exhibition, two shelters, a toilet and a basic campsite.

Mønsted Kalkgruber also combines geology, industrial history, nature and bats into a visitor experience. Of the approximately four kilometres of tunnels open to visitors, around two kilometres are illuminated. The area is part of a Natura 2000 protected area; a nature trail leads through sinkholes, limestone pastures and steep slopes to a lake in a former limestone quarry.

Randers Regnskov's Tropical Domes are home to monkeys, bats, sloths, manatees and Komodo dragons. In the Snake Temple, visitors can walk among live boa constrictors.

History and museums

The Grauballe Man at the Moesgaard Museum is considered the best-preserved bog body in the world and an archaeological find from the Danish Iron Age. He is on display in the Moesgaard Museum's Iron Age exhibition. The museum also presents the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Viking Age through scenography, sound, light and original archaeological finds.

The grass-covered roof of the Moesgaard Museum slopes down into the landscape and offers views over the forest and sea. The museum provides free parking and is easy to reach by public transport from Aarhus.

Den Gamle By presents the history of Danish market towns through the four periods 2014, 1974, 1927 and 1864. From April onwards, visitors can encounter people dressed as they were in earlier times, cooking, chopping wood, carrying out craftwork or serving customers in the shop.

The Frilandsmuseet Herning portrays rural life on the heathlands of western and central Jutland as it was lived in the 19th century. It also offers an authentic sound experience of the daily life of a heath farmer's family in the second half of the 19th century.

Museum Gammel Estrup features halls and rooms designed for different periods, including the knights' hall, bedrooms, a library and salons. During all holiday periods until Christmas, coffee and cake are sold in the manor-house kitchen from the wood-fired stove.

Klosterlund Museum displays archaeological finds dating back to the Mesolithic and presents the history of extensive peat production in the region. It also tells how people lived in harmony with nature over several millennia. The ARoS collection comprises more than 8,000 works, including masterpieces by Danish and international artists.

Lakes and historic ships

The 52-kilometre Himmelbjergruten hiking route runs through Denmark's lake district between Ry and Silkeborg via Himmelbjerget. In summer, hikers can use a solar-powered passenger ferry on one section of the lakes.

Hjejlen is the world's oldest original coal-fired paddle steamer still in operation. The journey with Hjejlen from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget takes one hour and 15 minutes; there is also the option of an evening cruise on Hjejlen or one of the other boats.
