Boeslum between beach meadow, reef and coastal landscape

Boeslum on the Kattegat combines a stretch of beach with a coastal landscape where nature observation, water activities and traces of history exist side by side. Boeslum Beach has a broad beach meadow covered with grass and flowers. The water is clear and becomes deep relatively quickly. At the same time, Boeslum is one of the beaches in Syddjurs Municipality awarded the Blue Flag. There are good parking facilities at Boeslum Beach; a kiosk is located in the beach area. At Boeslum Beach on the Kattegat, the broad beach meadow and clear water meet as two visible shoreline features.

Beach, reef and coastal landscape

A stone reef lies immediately off the coast at Boeslum Beach. The reef close to the shore offers scenes with small fish, hermit crabs and possibly flatfish. Boeslum and Dråby Beach are also home to a small population of the globally rare coastal mason bee. The beach is therefore connected not only with open water, but also with an opportunity to observe the coastal habitat.

The Boeslum coastal landscape area stretches along the Kattegat coast. From the coastal foreland, there are views across the Kattegat and towards the island of Hjelm. Around Boeslum Beach, vegetation reaches the coast in places and screens the holiday-home development from the shore. The beach meadow, reef, coastal foreland and vegetated sections thus characterize different facets of the same landscape area.

Water activities and paths

For days focused on maritime activities, Mols Bjerge National Park offers guided snorkeling excursions at Boeslum Beach. The shelter at Boeslum Beach serves as a base for kayaking, hiking and cycling in the surrounding area. At the same time, a clear rule applies: camping at the shelter at Boeslum Beach is prohibited. Water activities and movement on land are therefore both part of the beach’s surroundings.

The Sporet ved Dråby trail runs along the Purbækken in Boeslum Gunger and is designated as a pedestrian path. Boeslum Gunger was an old sea inlet that once connected Dråby Lake with the sea. Those traveling on foot through this landscape therefore encounter both a designated footpath and a historically documented connection between lake and sea. The former inlet remains part of the local history, not a description of a present-day sea connection.

Historical traces near Boeslum

Boesholm Castle Mound is located near the now-vanished village of Boeslum, close to Ebeltoft. Archaeological excavations at Boesholm Castle Mound uncovered the remains of a farm dating from the 14th to the 17th century. In addition to its beach and coastal landscape, Boeslum therefore also provides access to a regional history linked to a vanished place and specific archaeological remains.
