Hornslet between church art, Rosenholm and Cycling Route 20
## Hornslet between church art and cycling routes
If you are looking for accommodation in a place with cultural and historical points of interest and a starting point for a regional cycling route, Hornslet is well worth considering for your trip. Hornslet Church is the mausoleum of the Rosenkrantz family and was shaped by its four-hundred-year association with Rosenholm Estate. The church contains a mural dating from around 1250 depicting scenes from the Arthurian romances. It also has a Høhne organ, a rare type of organ of which only a few examples exist in the Nordic region. This gives Hornslet several clearly distinct points of interest for a trip focused on church art and history.
## Tinghus, library and local history
The Syddjurs Library in Hornslet is housed in a former Tinghus with an adjoining Herredsfoged residence dating from 1910. The building was designed by the architect Hack Kampmann. Behind Hornslet Library is the library garden, which is open to everyone. Hornslet Ting- and Arresthus also has cultural and historical value: its former functions included a Tinghus, prison, office and residence for the Herredsfoged. The Rosenholm Local Archive preserves collected material documenting the history of Hornslet and its surroundings over the years.
## Rosenholm, park and special trails
Rosenholm Castle was built after Jørgen Rosenkrantz acquired the Holm estate outside Hornslet from the king in April 1559. Rosenholm Castle Park has avenues of linden trees dating from the 1740s. It also contains the “Pirkentavl” summerhouse dating from around 1600. The castle is furnished with hundreds of pieces of furniture, paintings and tapestries that offer insights into the life of a noble family over the centuries. Public tours of Rosenholm Castle were offered during the summer months; no current programme can be inferred from this.
Along the “Follow in the Hobbits’ Footsteps” trail, signs provide information about the history. Videos featuring historian and Tolkien researcher Casper Clemmensen can be accessed via QR codes; he talks about his own past and Tolkien’s inspirations. The trail adds a narrative perspective to the historical themes, without requiring you to limit yourself to a purely museum-based visit.
## Nature, activities and cycling
The Spejder- og Friluftscenter Syddjurs includes a 15,000-square-metre natural area in Hornslet. It can be rented for family, school-class and nature activities, provided it is not being used by the 1st Hornslet Scout Group for scouting activities. Firewood and access to toilets are included in the rental. There are also playgrounds, parks and cafés in and around the centre of Hornslet. Regional Cycling Route 20 begins in Hornslet. In addition, the Rosenholm Festival takes place in the heart of Hornslet as a small music festival with a free weekend of live music.
Other destinations at this level are Balle, Ahl, Vrinners, Kongsgårde, Stødov, Følle, Skovgårde and Thorsager.
