Oldenbüttel: Hotels and Accommodation

The Gieselau Canal has numerous moorings for sailing and recreational boats. Fishing is an important activity in Oldenbüttel because of its many bodies of water. At the same time, Oldenbüttel’s sparse population and unspoilt nature offer holidaymakers and weekend visitors peace and relaxation.

Canal and Water

The 2.8-kilometre-long Gieselau Canal was opened in 1937 as a replacement for the Rendsburg lock and connects the Kiel Canal with the Eider. The Gieselau winds its way to the Eider and forms Oldenbüttel’s northwestern municipal boundary.

At the Gieselau lock, there are two steel bascule bridges that also support the sliding gates. The road bridge over the Gieselau Canal was designed based on the model of Dutch bascule bridges. The Gieselau lock offers a brief stop for those interested in technology, cycle tourists and water enthusiasts.

Along the Canal

The canal landscape provides space for extended walks and bike rides. The Oldenbüttel ferry transports cars, bicycles and pedestrians between the canal banks, provides access to the opposite bank and the Gieselau Canal, and is free of charge.

In the north of Oldenbüttel, cyclists can choose which side of the canal to continue along. The Hanerau-Hademarschen–Hamdorf stage of the Kiel Canal Route follows the canal to Oldenbüttel.

Landscape and Village Character

Quiet village roads in Oldenbüttel invite visitors to take a stroll. In the historic village centre near the canal, there are houses with thatched roofs. Former spoil disposal areas along the canal near Oldenbüttel have developed into valuable biotopes.

History

The construction of the Kiel Canal divided Oldenbüttel into a northern and a southern part of the municipality. The historic chain ferry “Alte Dame” has been preserved as a technical monument in nearby Steenfeld and can be visited there.

There is an inn in Oldenbüttel that serves meals.
