Schönwohld between Lake Hansdorf and Local History
Natural landscape between the lake and the Eider
If you would like to combine natural landscapes and local history on your trip, you will find both in Schönwohld. Schönwohld is a district of the municipality of Achterwehr and lies west of Kiel. Large parts of the municipal area are located in landscape or nature conservation areas and belong to Westensee Nature Park. There is also a public bathing area at Lake Ahrensee. For your planning, Lake Ahrensee with its public bathing area and Lake Hansdorf with its siltation vegetation offer two different bodies of water in Schönwohld.
Lake Hansdorf lies east of County Road 32 near Schönwohld. It is shallow, heavily silted up and eutrophic. The technical term “eutrophic” refers to a nutrient-rich condition of a body of water. Siltation vegetation includes reeds, willow scrub and alder swamp forest. The lake has a pronounced, almost continuous siltation belt; the other impairments are assessed as moderate.
Schönwohld borders more or less directly on the FFH area “Upper Eider area including lakes.” The abbreviation FFH stands for Flora-Fauna-Habitat. The area encompasses the valley of the Hansdorfer Aue from where it flows into the Eider to County Road 32 near Schönwohld. The Eider and County Road 32 form the two endpoints of the floodplain area. The valley areas characterized by extensively managed grassland are approximately 100 to 500 m wide; in some places, adjacent grassland areas on the moraine slopes are also included.
The meadow “Am Hundeplatz” in Schönwohld, created as part of the “BlütenReich Achterwehr” project, covers approximately 240 m² and is mown twice a year in accordance with the maintenance concept. This adds a small meadow with a defined maintenance scope to the lake, floodplain and grassland.
Paths for pedestrians and cyclists
Outside built-up areas, a combined footpath and cycle path runs along Rendsburger Landstraße between Achterwehr and Schönwohld and is very well developed. For route planning, this section of Rendsburger Landstraße between Achterwehr and Schönwohld can be taken into consideration for walking or cycling.
