Rodenbek: Hotels and Accommodation

Rodenbek lies in the Westensee terminal moraine region and in the “Westensee” Nature Park. The landscape surrounding the village was shaped during the last Ice Age and includes hills, valleys, forests, fields, marshes, lakes, swamps, small rivers, cliffs, gravel ridges and sandbanks.

Natural Environment

Rodenbek includes the “Ahrensee and Northeastern Westensee” nature reserve and the “Westensee Landscape” protected landscape. The municipality is also part of the “Upper Eider Area including Lakes” Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive and the “Ahrensee and Northeastern Westensee Nature Reserve” EU Special Protection Area.

In the wider Westensee Nature Park, the transition between natural and cultural landscapes is characterized by hedgerows, field margins, orchards and small-scale farming structures. Traces of historic crafts can also be found there.

Cultural History

Annenhof, a district of the municipality of Rodenbek, is home to the historic Annenhof estate, which was established after 1652. Caspar von Saldern acquired Annenhof Estate in 1771. Only the manor house remains of the former estate complex. The Annenhof Estate manor house is a twelve-bay semi-detached building with a pitched roof and garden-side projections.

Activities in the Nature Park

Westensee Nature Park has a marked network of cycling and riding trails. Hiking routes pass through nature reserves and protected landscapes; small lakes offer opportunities for swimming. Fishing is possible in streams, rivers and lakes. Guided cycling tours visit viewpoints and attractions.

A 22-kilometre regional hiking trail runs through the Eider lowlands to Lake Ahrensee and continues via Hohenhude, Wrohe and Westensee. Canoe and kayak trips on the Eider Ring Canal can reach the Kiel Canal or Lake Westensee. A 33-kilometre cycling loop runs through the Eider Valley, along the Eider Ring Canal and via Hohenhude and Wrohe around Lake Westensee.

Routes and Connections

There is a bus connection between Kiel and Flintbek for the Eider Valley Hiking Trail; railway stations are located in Flintbek and Bordesholm.
