Gokels: Hotels and Accommodation

Gokels is a starting point for extensive hikes on well-signposted trails. The town is served by the RB 63 on the Neumünster–Heide–Büsum line.

Landscape

Gokels is situated in a landscape shaped by the Ice Age, comprising wooded old moraine hills around the Vossberg and the lowlands of the Haner-Au. Both areas were designated as protected landscapes in 2000. From elevated points, there are views to the north across the lowlands and the Kiel Canal. The wooded old moraine hills around the Vossberg are also home to numerous megalithic tombs associated with the beginnings of settlement.

Church and History

St. John's Church stands on the Bakenberg in Gokels, where services are held regularly. The church grounds on the Bakenberg include a memorial to the plague outbreak of 1713. A separate stone at the community centre commemorates the 700th anniversary of the first documented mention of Ohrsee in 1281.

Nature and Culture

A megalithic tomb can be visited in the Hademarschen Hills near Hanerau-Hademarschen; a converted anti-aircraft tower in the Hademarschen Hills serves as a viewing platform. The OutEx climbing forest near Hanerau-Hademarschen includes a high ropes course and a treetop trail.

The local museum in Hanerau-Hademarschen has a Storm Room. The 19th-century watermill is operational and can be visited. Hanerau-Hademarschen also has a heated outdoor swimming pool.
