The 14.76-kilometre circular hiking trail “Thatched-Roof Idyl and Manor Landscape around Winnemark” begins and ends at Dorfstraße 3 in Winnemark.

Hiking between Fields, Forest and the Schlei

The route is classified as moderately difficult, requires a good basic level of fitness and follows well-maintained paths. Open sections through fields with views of typical thatched roofs are part of the route, as is the return journey, which after the section in Sieseby leads exclusively along the Schlei shore back to Winnemark.

The optional detour to Sieseby can be omitted; this shortens the hike by around four kilometres. The detour includes a rest area with two wooden benches directly on the Schlei shore.

Landscape along the Schlei

The hiking route passes through Karlsburger Holz, an FFH protected area covering 186 hectares. The near-natural deciduous forest lies on gently undulating glacial moraine terrain and is characterised by woodruff-beech forest; smaller areas consist of oak-hornbeam forest. Karlsburger Holz is considered the largest woodland area on the Schwansen peninsula.

The calm waters of the Schlei provide breeding, resting and overwintering grounds for numerous endangered bird species.

Exploring by Bike

The “Siesebyer Schleichwege” cycle route reaches Winnemark from Karlsburger Holz via field paths. Along the route, a detour from Winnemark to the Netzausleger is recommended, a large hammock-like structure offering views of the Schlei. Between Sieseby and Winnemark, the “SchleiUferTörn” uses a gravel road.

Culture and Local History

The Karlsburg manor house, dating from 1721, is considered a culturally and historically valuable building. It is reached via a protected lime-tree avenue planted in 1737.

In Schwonsburg, remains of fortifications probably dating from the late Middle Ages were documented in 1903; their historical significance is not known.

The Gasthof Victoria is considered accessible and welcomes children and dogs.
