Hamdorf: Hotels and Accommodation

Hamdorf is situated on the Eider River on the Geest ridge of Schleswig-Holstein. The surrounding Eider lowlands have an established network of cycle paths for leisure and local recreation.

Landscape

The Eider-Treene-Sorge landscape region includes extensive lowland grasslands, raised and lowland bogs, reed beds, wet meadows and near-natural shallow lakes. The area around Hamdorf offers opportunities for recreational paddling. A bathing area on the Eider in nearby Breiholz provides an opportunity for swimming.

Cycling and Water

On the southern side of the Kiel Canal, a cycle and footpath leads towards Kiel or Brunsbüttel. Rendsburg-Eckernförde district offers five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometres in length.

Nature

The Bargstaller Au lowlands are part of the Natura 2000 network and are connected to the municipalities of Hamdorf and Elsdorf-Westermühlen. They provide breeding habitat for meadow birds and are an important resting area for migrating waders and waterbirds from autumn to spring. In early spring, larger groups of tundra swans are regularly observed on the grassland areas.

History

Hamdorf was first documented on 28 May 1285 under the name Hammathorp. Archaeological evidence in the Hamdorf area includes Stone Age axes and arrowheads, fire pits and burnt-pit sites, an urn cemetery and two megalithic tombs.

Mobility

Hamdorf is located directly on Federal Road 203 between Heide and Rendsburg. There is an hourly bus service; the mobility station by the petrol station provides real-time departure information and offers shelter from the weather.
