Aalborg Municipality between art, the Viking Age and nature

Culture

Kunsten displays Danish and international art from the 20th century to the present day; its permanent collection comprises almost 4,000 works. The Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg is housed in a white marble building designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Every year, Kunsten hosts 200 lectures, concerts, family workshops, guided tours and other activities.

The Utzon Center houses a permanent exhibition about Jørn Utzon, the creator of the Sydney Opera House. The Utzon Center also hosts workshops, lectures, events, educational activities, guided tours and city walks. Godthåb Hammerværk is a preserved early industrial site whose buildings, inventory and waterways have been preserved.

History

The burial site at Lindholm Høje was used for around 600 years, approximately from 400 AD until shortly before 1000 AD. Lindholm Høje is Denmark’s largest burial site from the Viking Age. The exhibition at Lindholm Høje offers a virtual Viking helmet and an interactive experience of rowing a Viking ship.

Nature

Egholm is an island in the Limfjord within Aalborg Municipality. The Egholm ferry runs every half hour between Aalborg and Egholm. Several hiking trails on Egholm begin at the Egholm ferry landing. The beach meadows, uncultivated areas, forests and field paths are home to a natural variety of plant and animal life.

The natural areas of Aalborg Municipality include hiking and mountain biking routes, shelters and dog forests. At Halkær Sø, there are trails and birdwatching towers from which visitors can observe the birdlife. Guldbækstien is an approximately 5-kilometre-long hiking trail along the Guldbækken. Cycle route 102 runs around Halkær Sø and the adjacent inlet of the Limfjord, offering beautiful views across the river valley.

Hammer Bakker comprises varied landscapes with beech forests, open heaths, plains, lakes and ponds. At approximately 7,700 hectares, Lille Vildmose is Denmark’s largest protected land area. The designated area features a mosaic of woodland nature, heathland and nutrient-poor grasslands.

Lille Vildmose has observation towers, boardwalks, viewpoints and platforms; visitors can also observe moose and experience the restored Birkesø with its abundant birdlife. The part of Lille Vildmose known as Mellemområdet can be explored independently free of charge. Lille Vildmosecentret provides maps and offers visitors advice on exploring the bog.

The Halkær Mølle Nature Centre offers visitors year-round activities in Halkær Ådal and Aalborg Fjordland. One certified hiking route is 11 kilometres long.

Experiences

At Aalborg Zoo, visitors can experience wildlife from around the world, learn about the animals’ way of life and take part in various activities. Aalborg Zoo offers guided tours about the animals and everyday life at the zoo. Every year, Aalborg Carnival brings together 100,000 costumed carnival-goers and culminates in a grand finale celebration in Kildeparken.
