North Jutland between the North Sea and the Kattegat

North Jutland lies between the North Sea to the west and the Kattegat to the east. The region combines wide beaches, unique nature and coastal towns. The regional division includes the directly associated areas of Frederikshavn Municipality, Læsø, Aalborg Municipality, Mariagerfjord Municipality and Brønderslev.

Nature

At Hanstholm Lighthouse, the wheelchair-accessible Dronningestien trail leads from the lighthouse garden onto the cliff to a viewpoint overlooking the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve. The circular trail is approximately 1.5 kilometres long. In Lille Vildmose, the Mellemområdet area is open to the public and can be explored freely; the marsh forests may only be entered with a guide.

RÃ¥bjerg Mile is one of Europe's largest migrating dunes. The main activity there is walking on its sand. In Lille Vildmose, visitors can observe European bison, moose, red deer, wild boar, cranes and eagles. At the southern edge of Tvorup Klitplantage, a birdwatching tower offers views across Ã…lvand. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle and, with good binoculars, allows visitors to observe cranes and red deer.

Grenen is a unique natural phenomenon where the Skagerrak and the Kattegat meet. Jyske Ã…s was formed about 15,000 years ago by melting ice as well as by stones, gravel, clay and sand. The approximately 48-kilometre-long North Sea Trail leads from Hadsund in the south to Lille Vildmose in the north and offers historical, cultural and impressive nature experiences.

Culture

At Lodbjerg Lighthouse, an exhibition about the lighthouse keeper's duties is open to visitors. Skagens Museum has the world's largest collection of works by the Skagen painters. Voergaard Castle dates from 1481 and houses an art collection featuring works by, among others, Raphael and Goya.

Lindholm Høje is a burial site whose numerous stone formations mark almost 700 graves. The North Jutland Coastal Museum consists of four museums. In Aalborg, Kunsten is a museum building that is the only museum building outside Finland designed by Aalto.

Experiences

Lille Vildmosecentret offers private tours and public guided tours. The peat railway in Lille Vildmose operates during holidays, on weekends and on public holidays. Dinosaurlandet at Aalborg Zoo features 20 nearly lifelike dinosaurs. Aalborg Zoo in North Jutland also allows visitors to observe animals at close range, including tigers, lions, giraffes, anteaters, armadillos and capybaras.

FÃ¥rup Sommerland offers more than 60 rides; the admission ticket also includes use of the water park at no extra charge. Thy National Park has three mountain biking trails. Northern Europe's largest aquarium offers experiences beneath the surface of the water and features, among other things, seals and numerous marine animals.

Transport and cuisine

Nordjyske Jernbaner offers a train service from Skagen to Aalborg (Skørping); from there, DSB provides connections to the rest of the country. North Jutland cuisine includes, among other things, blue mussels, Norway lobster, Skagen ham and crisp vegetables.
