Groß Wüstenfelde: Hotels and Accommodation

Groß Wüstenfelde in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the places in the Mecklenburg Parkland known for its old manor houses and expansive gardens. The village is home to Groß Wüstenfelde Manor House, a listed and restored manor house that is around 300 years old. A Slavic hillfort surrounds the manor house; it is comparatively well preserved and of outstanding cultural and historical significance.

In the 1930s, settlers from the Rhineland, Westphalia and Upper Franconia moved to Groß Wüstenfelde and several nearby villages. This gave rise to a Catholic community in an otherwise predominantly Protestant region of northern Germany.

Churches and Cemeteries

The church in Matgendorf is a 20th-century brick building with side extensions and a roof turret with an open lantern. It houses a Jehmlich organ dating from 1965. The cemetery in Matgendorf contains a memorial to post-war typhus victims and the graves of deceased pastors. The cemetery in Schwetzin features a Pietà sculpture, a large wooden cross with a corpus and a funeral hall.

Farm and Cheese

In Groß Wüstenfelde, Kaup´s farm shop sells farm-produced cheese, eggs, beef and sausage. At the HofkäseSchule of Schafscheune Hofkäserei Vietschow, visitors can take part in guided tours and learn how cheese is made.
