A Baltic Sea holiday in Rostock is about more than just the coast: the region includes 62 kilometres of Baltic coastline with a number of seaside resorts, as well as the coastal hinterland with the river valleys of the Warnow and Recknitz. Deciding which aspect of your trip you want to focus on is a good starting point when choosing where to stay: Would you mainly like to explore coastal towns, spend more time in nature, or combine culture with outdoor activities?

Rostock

Coast, river valleys and trails through nature

The landscape of Sternberger Seenland Nature Park is shaped by deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests. Hiking and cycling are the main activities here. Those interested in wildlife can join discovery tours to see beavers, wolves and white-tailed eagles in Sternberger Seenland, Nossentiner-Schwinzer-Heide, Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Kummerower See nature parks, as well as at Wildpark-MV. At Wildpark-MV, you can explore the park independently or take part in guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks.

For active days featuring climbing, Kletter- und Erlebniswald Schwaan offers seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers. Another attraction there is the 116.5-metre-long Flying Fox zipline, which runs directly over the lake. These activities offer something different from hiking or cycling in the lake district: consider whether you would rather focus your excursions on nature trails or on climbing and adventure activities.

Culture and regional history

At the Wolhynier Umsiedlermuseum in Linstow, tours for groups and individuals use ethnographic objects, photographs and documents to tell the story of the Volhynian Germans. It spans from the mid-19th century to their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. The museum is therefore a cultural highlight for visitors who would like to explore this distinctive history. The Heinrich Schliemann Museum displays original finds from Troy alongside replicas of Mycenaean gold finds. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to Schliemann’s turbulent life and archaeological legacy.

Theatre history and historic sights also contribute to the region’s cultural offering: the theatre in Güstrow is Mecklenburg’s oldest surviving civic theatre. Other historic sights in the region include the former monastery in Rühn and the Minster in Bad Doberan. The historic Molli railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. Its track gauge is 900 mm; since 1886, the railway has been part of the coastal towns’ character.

Experiences for different interests

Karls Erlebnis-Dorf Rövershagen offers more than 50 experiences, including “Karls Bonbonland”, an indoor experience world covering more than 2,000 square metres. At the manufactory market, visitors can discover handmade jams, confectionery and chocolate, as well as fresh coffee. Those interested in agriculture can learn how farming works along the Milchstraße near Bützow.

The twin mills of Neu Vorwerk offer further insights into historic crafts. In Alt Kalen, a real windmill miller still grinds flour. You can choose how to balance these varied cultural and excursion interests when planning your trip: mills and museums offer a different focus from nature tours or indoor experiences.
