Panoramic tour: changes in elevation and path surfaces
The panoramic tour runs through Alt Sührkow. It is hilly, with several steeper climbs, and follows water-bound gravel paths, paved roads and concrete trackways. When planning, therefore, take both the gradients and the changing surfaces into account.
At the entrance to Alt Sührkow, the panoramic tour turns left and then follows an almost level stretch past Bukow towards Todendorf. This section provides a clear contrast within the otherwise hilly tour. The nearly level stretch does not mean that the entire tour is flat. Check the current route and path conditions before setting out.
Manor houses and architectural history
The Alt Sührkow estate was first mentioned in historical records in 1297 as a fief held by the knight Friedrich Moltke. This early mention links the estate’s history to a specific name and a clearly identified historical role.
In Hohen Mistorf, a village within the municipality of Alt Sührkow, a Neo-Gothic cemetery chapel made of yellow brick stands on a hill in the older part of the cemetery. It has a west portal and a rose window in the gable.
The park at Hohen Mistorf manor is home to rare tree species such as Weymouth pine, giant sequoia, Douglas fir, ginkgo and plane trees, as well as several species of oak. The park thus provides a landscape feature alongside the architectural features of the chapel and manor house.
A visit to the erratic boulder garden in the village of Hohen Mistorf is also recommended. If you plan to visit, check access arrangements in advance.
Pohnstorf is also part of the municipality of Alt Sührkow. Its manor house stands halfway up the 124 m-high Hardtberg and is one of the highest-situated manor houses in Mecklenburg. The 124 metres refers to Hardtberg, not the height of the manor house.
Farm shop and regional cuisine
The farm shop on Dorfstraße in Alt Sührkow sells beef and pork, as well as sausages and other processed meats made on site; organic meat is also available. The Alt Sührkow dairy sells food directly to customers. Its farm shop is connected to an EU-approved slaughterhouse and facilities for butchering, sausage-making and smoking.
The historic Alt Sührkow manor house is home to a restaurant serving regional-style traditional German cuisine. A large proportion of the ingredients comes directly from the agricultural operation. Before travelling, check the restaurant’s opening arrangements and the farm shop’s current selection.
