Steffenshagen: Hotels and Accommodation

Steffenshagen is considered a green village, characterised by nearby meadows, pastures and forests. At the same time, the village offers a peaceful inland alternative to the Baltic Sea resorts: the hills around Steffenshagen provide views towards the nearby Baltic Sea.

Culture and History

Steffenshagen village church is considered one of the largest and most impressive village churches in Mecklenburg. It was founded by monks from Althof-Doberan Cistercian Abbey. The carved altar is believed to have been created between 1450 and 1500 in the workshop of a Rostock artist. The church received its first organ in 1901 from court organ builder Marcus Runge.

The grounds of Wilhelmsburg are home to a studio with an exhibition gallery created by the painter and graphic artist Herbert Malchow. The post mill is also part of the local history: in 1998, it was moved from Buschkuhnsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt to Steffenshagen. The mill can be visited and is one of Steffenshagen’s attractions along the Kühlung cycle route.

Crafts and Sightseeing

At the old bakehouse at Thielke’s Memorial Farm, visitors can see how bread is baked. Bernd Thielke’s historic forge offers demonstrations of traditional forging techniques. Guided tours are available at the museum forge in Steffenshagen. Christoph Ohse can also be watched at work as a potter shaping vessels on the potter’s wheel.

Niedersteffenshagen is considered suitable for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. The Kühlung landscape around Niedersteffenshagen encompasses hills, valleys, deciduous and mixed forests, as well as small streams.
