Village Church, Border History and Local Heritage Museum
Rethwisch Village Church is an example of North German Brick Gothic architecture. Its interior is designed as a three-aisled, three-bay stepped hall. A Crucifixion scene dated 1530 appears in the central panel of the valuable winged altarpiece. Other features include a Late Gothic triumphal cross on the north wall and an elaborately decorated pulpit in the auricular and strapwork style. A Rostock artist made the pulpit from oak in 1666. The architecture, altarpiece and pulpit each give the church its own art-historical and cultural focus.
One of the last GDR border guard watchtowers stands on the dyke in Börgerende. The Jemnitz sluice, which is still standing today, is nearby. It was built in 1880/82 after the storm surge of 12–15 November 1872. The storm surge period is part of the structure’s history; the date 1880/82 indicates when it was built.
The Börgerende-Rethwisch Local Heritage Museum focuses on the municipality’s 700-year history, as well as traditional local crafts and agriculture. Visitors can view historic machinery and agricultural items in the adjacent open-air area. The museum therefore focuses on both local history and craft and agricultural topics.
