Vordingborg Municipality: Nature, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Vordingborg Municipality is home to the Møn Biosphere Reserve. Here, natural and cultural history coexist alongside protected landscapes, hiking trails, cliffs and historic sites.
Nature
The Møn Biosphere Reserve encompasses 119 preserved megalithic tombs from prehistoric Denmark. Ulvshale was formed from flint stones from Møns Klint, while Ulvshale Skov has been preserved as an open, light-filled grazing woodland.
On Ulvshale and Nyord, birdlife is the most significant natural attraction. Because of their birdlife, Ulvshale and Nyord are internationally protected under the Ramsar Convention. The hiking trail on Ulvshale can be used by wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties.
The trail network of Klinteskoven offers dramatic views from the cliff edge of Møns Klint. At GeoCenter Møns Klint, guided expeditions along the cliff coast allow visitors to find fossils that are 70 million years old.
Trails
Camønoen is a 175-kilometre hiking trail through Møn, Nyord and Bogø. It is divided into stages and detours, allowing visitors to choose individual sections. Vordingborg Municipality also has marked networks of hiking, cycling and riding trails.
An official Camønopause provides water, toilets, electricity or a charging station, shelter, and the opportunity to meet local residents. The regional hiking route Sjællandsleden is being established along the coast of Vordingborg Municipality, enabling tourists and local residents to use areas near the coast.
Culture
Danmarks Borgcenter conveys the medieval history of power in Vordingborg. Vordingborg Castle Ruins include Gåsetårnet, the old ring wall and the remains of St Andrew's Church. Visitors can explore the castle ruins with an audio guide.
Møns Museum presents twelve stories about Møn from antiquity to the present day. The museum is located in Empiregården in Stege, a historic merchant's courtyard.
Mølleporten in Stege is a well-preserved relic of the medieval town fortifications. The gate was probably built in the late Middle Ages, between 1418 and 1452. Visitors can enter Mølleporten and enjoy views of the town and sea from the historic fortifications.
Kunsthal 44Møen presents summer exhibitions from 23 May to 20 September, as well as public artworks in the surrounding nature. All buildings of Kunsthal 44Møen are accessible to wheelchair users, with the exception of PS44.
The Møllestangen Museum is free to access from sunrise to sunset. Møllestangen on Nyord is a four-square-metre museum about the work of pilots and the history of Nyord.
Geographical context
Danmarks Borgcenter and Masnedøfortet are within walking distance of Masnedsund Harbour. The Præstø Harbour is a good starting point for discovering Præstø Fjord and the historic town centre.
