Skaverup on Avnø Fjord: Beach, Nature and Water Sports

Skaverup between the fjord and the coast

Your introduction to Skaverup begins at Avnø Fjord: Næs and Skaverup Strand are located along this fjord. The coastal stretch combines different landscapes with opportunities for nature observation, exercise and water sports. Skaverup Strand is a sandy and stony beach and is well suited to coastal fishing. This gives the area a clear connection to the water without limiting the beach and coast here to a single experience.

Landscape with protected nature

The landscape around Skaverup is unspoiled. The coastal stretch with Næs-Skaverup Strand includes protected nature under Section 3 in the form of meadows, marshes, dry grasslands, coastal meadows and lakes. Those interested in different coastal formations will also find cliffs in the surrounding area: coastal cliffs occur along the coast north of Næs and Skaverup Strand. The area between Næs-Skaverup and Avnø has a relatively steep slope and is therefore one of the spatial features you can take into account when understanding the landscape.

North of the former Skaverup Nor lies a higher moraine plain, up to 16 metres above the former sea inlet. The designations “former Skaverup Nor” and “former sea inlet” preserve the historical connection to the landscape. Together with the meadows, marshes, lakes and coastal cliffs, they form a varied section between the fjord, landforms and protected areas.

Birdlife and special views

At Næs and Skaverup Strand, the fjord and the land are home to abundant birdlife and wildlife. Benches along the embankment beside the fjord offer views where herons can be observed. This specific spot combines the waterside landscape with an opportunity to take in the surroundings attentively and at a leisurely pace. Sunsets over Knudshoved can also be seen from the Næs-Skaverup area. Nature observation and views across the water are therefore just as much a part of the area’s character as spending time on the beach.

Hiking, cycling and water sports

There are good opportunities for hiking and cycling along the coast near Skaverup and in some of the surrounding forests. Depending on your interests, you can combine your stay with coastal paths or sections through the forest. For activities on the water, Avnø Fjord and Smålandsfarvandet are suitable for windsurfing. The “Dybsø to Næs Strand” boating route is 19 km long and is not signposted. Its length and the lack of signposting are important details for anyone interested in maritime routes and who does not want to base their planning solely on marked trails on land.

Historical connection at Næs

At Næs, at the end of Avnø Fjord, a small settlement existed during the Late Iron Age and the Viking Age, where Viking ships could dock.
