Nyby between harbour, coast and island history

Nyby is the smaller and newer part of the large village on Bogø and is located close to the harbour. The area was originally built as a kind of Nyboder for Bogø’s seafaring population. You encounter this maritime history in the houses, at the harbour and along the ferry route. In this way, Nyby combines a distinct location with traces of an island whose past is closely linked to seafaring.

Across the Grønsund by ferry

The IDA ferry is one of the few wooden ferries in Denmark that still operates on a fixed route. From the Nyby ferry terminal on Bogø’s southern coast, you can travel to Stubbekøbing on Falster in summer. The fixed route between Bogø and Stubbekøbing crosses the Grønsund. The historic fishing boat K1054 Karen af Bogø is based at Bogø Havn. A ladder enables people of all ages to sail on the K1054 Karen af Bogø. Bogø Havn also has a shelter site with a fire pit.

The districts of Bogø By and Nyby feature captains’ villas and smaller skipper’s houses. Some buildings have ship names on their façades, telling the story of Bogø’s seafaring history. Windmill and ship models

The Dutch windmill Bogø Mølle, built in 1852, stands in the area around Nyby. Bogø Mølle opens during the summer holidays and in connection with various events. Three ship models from the 19th century hang in Bogø Church, bearing witness to Bogø’s history as a seafaring island. Together, these sites lead from the visible landscape and buildings to individual pieces of evidence of the island’s history.
