Varekil: Husebyleden, Sea Views and Nature
Hiking between Varekil and Ellös
For visitors who want to combine nature experiences with maritime landscapes, Husebyleden provides a specific route around Varekil. The hiking trail is located on Road 178 between Varekil and Ellös. It is 3.5 kilometres long; the walk takes approximately two hours, including a break for your own provisions. There are ten signposted points of interest along the trail.
Signposted points of interest along Husebyleden
The signposted points of interest along Husebyleden include Huseby fornborg. The site was a refuge fort where people retreated in the event of threatened enemy attacks. The trail therefore combines a historical function with a striking landscape: Huseby fornborg offers far-reaching views of the sea.
Uggletoften is also one of the signposted points of interest. The site is a snail-shell ravine and is also home to an extensive beech forest. Huseby fornborg and Uggletoften thus represent different focal points within the same documented hiking route: here, the former use as a defensive structure is highlighted together with the sea views, while there the distinctive terrain and beech forest take centre stage.
Historical traces and Svanvik nature area
Another historical point of reference is Tingshuset. It served as a courthouse from 1912 to 1961. The two-storey wooden building is covered with plaster. Its granite plinth, smoothly plastered façades and steep hipped roof with Eternit roofing add several visible materials to the timber structure. The material palette thus extends from the stone plinth through the plastered exterior surfaces to the roof covering.
The nearby Svanvik nature reserve is easiest to reach via a turn-off from the old road between Varekil and Stala. There, the very shallow Svanviks kile and Tjuve kile form large, continuous coastal meadows with a very diverse birdlife. Many waders can be found there, especially during the spring and autumn migrations. For travel planning, Svanvik is therefore described above all as a natural area with a strong connection to birdlife. The geographical details differ from those of Husebyleden on Road 178 between Varekil and Ellös: Svanvik is associated with the road between Varekil and Stala.
