Gullholmen: Culture Between Narrow Lanes and Nature on Härmanö

Gullholmen combines an unusually dense coastal landscape with a culturally and historically significant museum scene and nature trails on Härmanö. When planning your trip, it is especially worth considering whether you would like to combine narrow lanes, maritime history, and protected landscapes. Gullholmen is one of the most densely built-up coastal communities in Bohuslän; narrow passages and lanes lead between the houses down to the water.

Culture Among Houses, Museums, and the Church

At Skepparhuset, you can learn about the history of a family who lived there during Gullholmen’s heyday. The same house also contains an intact sailmaking workshop with sails from Albert’s own cutters, Xantho and Harold. This makes local history tangible not only through names and dates, but also through preserved working contexts.

Stenstugan was built in 1832 and is now the only surviving building of its kind on Gullholmen. It is also among the oldest houses in the village and houses a museum with old household objects and furniture. The Gullholmen Art Museum offers a different perspective on the village’s history: it displays works by around 70 artists whose subjects have a particular connection to Gullholmen. The museum also aims to give future generations insights into artists’ lives on Gullholmen over a period of 100 years through a selected collection of paintings.

Gullholmen Church is also part of the cultural and historical orientation. It was completed in autumn 1799 on Lilla Hermanö in a sheltered valley. The church contains an altarpiece installed in 1828 that probably originated from a Dutch artist. From a cultural and historical perspective, Gullholmen is of national interest.

Härmanö: Cliffs, Trails, and Settlement Traces

Several paths and roads lead from Gullholmen to Härmanö. The Härmanö Nature Reserve encompasses rocky cliffs, heathland, deciduous vegetation, meadows, and pastures, creating a distinctly different landscape impression from the densely built-up lanes by the water. On Härmanö, a trail leads to Skållehus, where settlement remains from the 16th century have been preserved. The trail connects the natural surroundings of Härmanö with a concrete testament to the area’s history and adds historic settlement traces to the landscape.

Some of the marked trails on Härmanö have been adapted for wheelchair users. The Gullholmen Nature and Bird Museum complements the natural surroundings with a collection of 150 birds, more than 10 mammals, and several marine organisms. The range of attractions thus extends from landscapes and settlement history to the presentation of wildlife.

Getting There and Further Orientation
