Stillingsön – historic seaside resort on the eastern side of Orust
Stillingsön as a historic seaside resort on Sweden’s west coast
Stillingsön is a destination for travellers who, when choosing accommodation, want to consider not only the coast but also the history of a seaside resort. The resort was established in 1865 and was the first independent tourism initiative on Orust. That same year, Lars Bernzon founded the Stillingsön seaside resort.
On the eastern side of Orust, Stillingsön is one of Bohuslän’s smaller seaside resorts. At the same time, the place is considered a well-preserved example of the 19th-century seaside resorts on Sweden’s west coast. This dual classification is helpful when making your choice: Stillingsön combines the manageable scale of a smaller seaside resort with a clearly recognisable historical context, without its significance needing to be inferred from modern size or a current events programme.
Historic surroundings and maritime development
The landscape of the historic seaside resort is also part of its inherited character. The historic surroundings of Stillingsön were characterised by lushly vegetated areas and calmer waters. This description helps explain why, throughout its history, the place was perceived not only through its buildings but also through the connection between stays at the seaside resort and the coastal landscape. For visitors seeking a quieter place with a strong historical character, the most important indication therefore lies in the resort’s traditional layout and its surroundings.
Maritime accessibility is also part of the place’s history, but this is not a statement about present-day connections. In 1866, the steamer “Uddevalla” called at Stillingsön four times a week on the route between Gothenburg and Uddevalla. The historical timetable shows that, shortly after its establishment, the seaside resort was already connected to a regional shipping service. In terms of understanding the place, this information complements the history of its bathers with a specific link between the coastal resort and the harbour route.
Buildings and traditional bathing facilities
The historic buildings include Pensionat Sjöhult, which was built in 1868. In addition, the building of the former Myckleby vicarage was rebuilt on the shore of Stillingsön and given the name Sjövik. Both details point to the architectural development of the place and to the importance of historic buildings in understanding Stillingsön.
Stillingsön had a bathing house, later referred to as a warm-bath house, as well as a bathing pool. Today, Stillingsön is one of the smaller cold-bath houses on Sweden’s west coast. This classification describes the documented historical context of the place; it is not a statement about current bathing operations or opening hours today.
From croft site to seaside resort
Stillingsön’s history extends considerably further back than the founding of the seaside resort. Stillingsön was originally common land belonging to the Kåröd estate; this is documented in the visitation records of Bishop Jens Nilsson from 1574–1597. As early as 1688, Stillingsön is mentioned as a croft site. Those looking for accommodation in a place with several historical layers can therefore trace the development here from an earlier settlement form, through the founding of the seaside resort, to the preserved character of the 19th century.
