Nosund is a destination for travelers who want to combine water-based experiences with cultural history and days of hiking. The cultural environment around Nösund includes numerous prehistoric settlement sites. There are also swimming spots, historic buildings and various opportunities to explore the Pilgrimsleden Orust. For planning your trip, the key consideration is therefore the mix you want: brief cultural experiences, time by the water or a longer hiking stage.

Cultural history around Nösund

At the old steamboat landing in Nösund stands the warehouse of a herring saltery, built in 1873–1874. Nösund Chapel was built in 1912. Its altarpiece dates from the time of Charles XI. Anyone interested in the history of the area can incorporate these three distinct historical periods into their day plan: prehistoric settlement sites, the maritime past of the herring saltery and the more recent history of the chapel.

The historical information is particularly suitable for a trip in which not only the landscape but also tangible traces of local history play a role. At the same time, the choice remains open: you can focus on culture or combine the places mentioned with a walk or hiking route without limiting the trip to a single theme.

Hiking on the Pilgrimsleden Orust

The Pilgrimsleden Orust offers routes of various lengths for orientation. An 11.2-kilometer section leads from Tegneby Church via Brattebräcka to Nösund Chapel. The entire pilgrimage trail is 90 kilometers long. For a longer stage, the section from Nösund Chapel to Morlanda Church is also described: it is 19 kilometers long and classified as moderate to difficult.

These differences help with personal planning. Anyone looking for a clearly defined route can consider the 11.2-kilometer section. For more demanding hiking days, the 19-kilometer section offers a different option. At Nösund Chapel, you can hike a section of the Pilgrimsleden Orust independently; a digital map shows your exact location. Orust also has five hiking trails with information boards about local history. There are also award-winning hiking trails near Nösund, allowing nature and local history to be combined.

Swimming Spots and Buildings by the Water

Nösund has two swimming spots with historic bathhouses. Parking is available within walking distance of Nösund swimming area. This makes it possible to plan time by the water as a separate activity without leaving out the cultural and hiking themes.

Nösund Varmbadhus is a building from 1903 with a sauna and meeting room. It is located directly by the water, with views of Tångesund. The building adds another historic site with a clear connection to the shoreline to the swimming spots.

Guidance for Further Planning

The Orust tourist information office is located in the Kajutan cultural center in Henån, within the associated municipality. Brochures and maps are available there. This can be helpful if you would also like to consider Orust’s five historic hiking trails in addition to the routes mentioned.

If you would like to expand your search to other places, you can also check Svanesund, Mollösund, Gullholmen, Varekil, Svanvik, Käringön, Henån and Hälleviksstrand.
