Lidköping on Lake Vänern – Culture, Nature and Waterfront Paths

Lidköping is located on the shores of Lake Vänern. Together with Götene and Mariestad, the town is part of the Vänerskärgården med Kinnekulle UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Water

At Framnäs beach park, a long waterfront promenade leads out onto a newly constructed pier. The park also has a 150-metre-long jetty where visitors can swim in deeper water. Boardwalks and jetties run around a small lake, offering opportunities to observe the park’s wildlife and plant life.

Framnäsbadet is a heated outdoor swimming pool on the shores of Lake Vänern with a 50-metre pool. It also has diving towers at 3, 5 and 10 metres, a diving board, a 20 × 6 metre pool and a paddling pool. Lidköpings kanotförening rents canoes for paddling on the Lidan towards the Flian. SUP boards and kayaks are available for rent on the beach at KronoCamping in Lidköping.

Culture and History

Limtorget is Lidköping’s oldest district. It is also the only preserved part of the old town to survive the great town fire of 1849. Limtorget is home to a printing museum and an arts and crafts workshop. The collection of Limtorgstryckeriet is maintained and displayed there by Vänermuseet with the support of volunteers. Visits to Limtorgstryckeriet can be arranged on request.

The collections at Vänermuseet focus on shipping, trade, the lives of lighthouse communities and the everyday life of small-scale fishermen. Lidköpings konsthall presents exhibitions by local, national and international artists and offers guided tours of exhibitions, workshops and other programme activities.

Food and Drink

The café at Rörstrand Museum serves a regionally produced selection of open sandwiches on homemade bread, pastries and seasonal light meals on Rörstrand porcelain. In the wider Lidköping area, Spikens Fiskehamn on Kållandsö offers freshly smoked Vänern fish, lake-caught fish, refined products, delicacies and vendace roe.

Nature and Trails

In the wider Lidköping area, Östra Sannorna is a municipal nature reserve. The nature reserve is located directly next to the town and offers opportunities for hiking and swimming. A hiking trail made of wooden boardwalks runs through Östra Sannorna, with information boards and a birdwatching tower.

In the wider Lidköping area, Naturum Vänerskärgården–Victoriahuset is intended as a link to Djurö National Park and other natural areas in the Lake Vänern archipelago. Råda Ås is a recreational and leisure area about 5 kilometres from the town centre, with hiking trails, running and training routes, an outdoor fitness area and a viewpoint.

The approximately 13-kilometre-long, blue-marked Traneberg Trail begins at Läckö Golf, runs close to the shore through various types of nature and leads through varied terrain. The 5-kilometre-long Strandpromenaden route in Lidköping leads from the marina and Framnäs beach park along Lake Vänern through Tofta to Giacomina.

Villa Giacomina is an eighteenth-century English landscape park with winding paths, streams, bridges and a summerhouse. The forest at Villa Giacomina is mostly open and easy to walk through. The stadsnära lantgård in Råda allows families to visit animals and experience life on a farm.
