Uddevalla: Coastal Trails, Archipelago and Culture

Uddevalla offers a varied landscape with cliffs and an archipelago, as well as lakes and green forests. The selection of localities for Uddevalla also includes Kamperöd, Högås, Kärlingesund, Dramsvik, Herrestad, Uddevalla, Ammenäs, Ljungskile, Lane-Ryr, Hogstorp and Stan.

Coast and trails

The Strandpromenaden runs through Uddevalla, a 9.3-kilometre route for pedestrians and cyclists. The route runs from Skalbankarna via Uddevalla city centre to Lindesnäs and is divided into forest, urban and coastal sections. Signposts and information boards are located along the route.

The Kuststigen also runs through Uddevalla from Skalbankarna along the award-winning Strandpromenaden. One possible combination is a trip on the m/s Sunningen from Södra Hamnen in central Uddevalla to the steamboat landing stage near Ammenäs, followed by a return hike along the Kuststigen on the southern shore of Byfjorden.

Nature and trails

At Emaus Lantgård, visitors can experience various farm animals in the Emaus nature reserve. The Emauspromenaden is approximately 600 metres long and is also suitable for wheelchairs, walkers and pushchairs.

The two nature reserves in the Herrestadsfjället area invite visitors to hike, pick mushrooms and berries, ski and fish, among other activities. Skalbankarna is home to fossil shells of mussels and snails from animals that lived more than 10,000 years ago. Visitors can walk along hiking trails there and visit the Skalbanksmuseet.

Bassholmen has hiking trails and barbecue areas in its nature reserve. The former shipyard buildings on Bassholmen house a boat museum displaying older types of boats. In summer, Bassholmen can be reached from Uddevalla by excursion boat.

The Lelångenleden follows the railway embankment of the disused Lelångebanan railway line and runs through the beautiful Bjursjöområdet area in Uddevalla. Vindsvalan is an approximately 4.2-kilometre-long gravel loop with moderate ascents and descents. At UpplevelseLadan, visitors can rent kayaks.

Culture and history

The ruins of Ture Malmgrens borg preserve local history and offer a beautiful view. They can be visited year-round; from the car park by the tennis courts on Dalstigen, it is approximately 400 metres to the circular trail.

The Bohusläns museum features permanent exhibitions on the history of Bohuslän, as well as temporary exhibitions and contemporary art. The cultural programme offers lectures, music evenings, themed days and exhibitions. The exhibition “Uddevalla genom tiderna” presents more than 500 years of Uddevalla’s history.

Gustafsberg is Sweden’s oldest seaside resort and spa, with origins dating back to the late 18th century. Gustafsberg can be visited year-round and is suitable, among other activities, for walking along the easily accessible Strandpromenaden. Bokenäs gamla kyrka is one of the oldest surviving medieval churches in Bohuslän; the nave, chancel and apse date from the 12th century.

“Konst på stan” is a walking tour of several locations featuring public art in Uddevalla Municipality. The climbing wall at Rimnershallen is eleven metres high and open to anyone who would like to try climbing under the guidance of Bohusläns klätterklubb. Storms Botanik offers visitors creative workshops and events.

Local products

Systrarna Frukt och Grönt has a farm shop where visitors can buy seasonal produce, homemade baked goods and other local products. Alfredssons Charkuteri på Söder sells locally sourced meat, as well as cheese, jams, preserves, crispbread and honey from local food producers.
