Between Waterways, Forest Landscapes and History

Ljungskile offers various ways to tailor your stay to your interests: circular trails lead from the shore of Ljungskileviken into the countryside, historic churches tell stories from different eras, and Bredfjället, an extensive natural and cultural landscape, is located nearby. When looking for suitable accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether walks by the water, more challenging trails, family destinations or cultural and historical impressions should be the focus.

Hiking with Different Trail Profiles

The Märtalederna in Ljungskile comprise one 4.3-kilometre circular trail and one 6.5-kilometre circular trail. Another option is the Salt till sött circular hiking trail. It is approximately 6 kilometres long and leads from the shore of Ljungskileviken to the small Skarsjön. The easiest way to start this loop is at Ljungskile Central Station; another starting point is Ljungskile Folkhögskola.

If you are looking for a trail with considerably more varied terrain, the Skarsjöleden forms a loop around Stora Skarsjön east of Ljungskile on Bredfjället. The trail is hilly and includes steep sections. Its sections run over forest paths, rocks and gravel. This specific terrain distinguishes it from a short walk by the water.

The waterfront promenade in Ljungskile is easy to walk along. The path runs beside the water and is suitable for a short stroll as well as for families with children. Badhusparken also features the themed playground “Småkrypens värld”. Kungsparken is a bathing area in Ljungskile.

Bredfjället and Silverfallet

Bredfjället is a wilderness and cultural landscape of approximately 10 square kilometres, with forests, marshes, streams and around 30 lakes. Numerous cultural and historical remains on Bredfjället tell of a hard life and poverty. Those who wish to combine nature observation with landscape history will therefore find not only forest and water here, but also traces of earlier living conditions.

One of the prominent natural attractions is Silverfallet, a 15-metre-high waterfall in Ljungskile. The nearest car park is located approximately 700 metres beyond the Skarsjövallen sports field; from there, it is about 1 kilometre on foot. These approximate figures remain tied to the respective starting point and the walk to the waterfall.

Churches, Seaside Resort and Maritime Impressions

Ljungs kyrka was built in 1901–1902 in the Neo-Gothic style typical of the period. Ljungs gamla kyrka was probably built in the 12th or early 13th century. Both details represent different historical eras and give your sightseeing in Ljungskile a clear cultural focus.

Lyckorna in Ljungskile was founded in 1877 by estate owner Robert MacFie as a traditional seaside resort. The old Klocktorn in Lyckorna is now home to Musselbaren. Fresh blue mussels are served there with classic accompaniments. The Ljungskile Kajakcenter is also located at the marina in Ljungskileviken.

Activities in Different Seasons

At Norra Fjället, there is a 2.5-kilometre illuminated trail for hiking and running, as well as skiing in winter. The hiking trails and ski tracks at Norra Fjället are open to everyone. Another seasonal event is the orienteering competition organised by Ljungskile Friluftsklubb, which takes place every October and is described as Bohuslän’s largest orienteering competition.
