Lidköping: Culture, Water and City Life
Accommodation in Lidköping
Lidköping offers several different ways to enjoy a stay: maritime culture on Lake Vänern, walks through the reeds and time for swimming all come together here. The Vänern Museum is located on the shores of Lake Vänern in Lidköping and connects the lake with the history of life along its shores.
Vänern Museum: The Lake, History and Everyday Life
The Vänern Museum presents 400 million years of history. Its focus is on shipping and trade, life for the people who lived at the lighthouses, and the everyday lives of farming fishermen. The aquarium features fish species from Lake Vänern: pike, perch, roach, vendace, asp, white bream and eel. Child-friendly activities about ships and shipwrecks round out a museum visit. If you are particularly interested in the lake’s fish, you can start with the aquarium; if you want to understand how people have made use of Lake Vänern, you will find topics covering shipping, trade and fishing.
Limtorgstryckeriet and Its Collection
Limtorgstryckeriet began in Grästorp in 1878 and operated in its original condition until 1975. It was moved to the Limtorget cultural reserve in Lidköping. The Vänern Museum manages and displays the Limtorgstryckeriet collection. A few dedicated volunteers support the work; more modern equipment and machines complement the collection. Demonstrations can be arranged on request. This offers a look not only at the history of the print shop, but also at its collection and the more modern additions.
City Life Around the Market Square and Park
A market with stallholders is held at Nya Stadens Torg on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Stadsträdgården is in the heart of Lidköping and is an easy walk from Nya Stadens Torg and the guest harbour. The paths in the park have been adapted for strollers and wheelchairs, making it easy for the whole group to get around. Stadsträdgården also has a playground and a pond. In summer, music and other events are held there at Dina-scenen, including evenings in the Sommar i trägårn series. The town hall is now a landmark of Lidköping. If you are planning a particular summer visit, check the latest event dates.
Swimming or a Walk by the Water
Framnäs Beach Park has a sandy beach with shallow, child-friendly water. A 150-metre-long bathing jetty provides access to deeper water. One of the park’s bathing jetties is equipped with handrails and a ramp. If you want to choose between shallow water near the shore and deeper water when swimming, you will find different options here. The Strandpromenaden route offers a different experience: it runs from central Lidköping to Sjölunda. Some paths cross the reeds on wooden boardwalks, and platforms offer views of Kinnekulle. This gives you a choice of outdoor activities, from swimming to a route with stretches through the reeds and scenic viewpoints.
