The church village of Tun is located in Lidköping Municipality in Västergötland. The cultural landscape described here includes arable land and horse pastures; Lake Vänern is also nearby. You can get to know the area through its landscape as well as its long history and the Vänerslingan. These themes offer different starting points for planning a trip: a regional route, traces of the past and an exercise trail with a named starting point.

The Vänerslingan and the landscape around Tun

The Vänerslingan is both a road and a water route along the southwestern shore of Lake Vänern, continuing as far as Tun. Further west in the region, it runs along the lakeshore west of Lidköping. One road section leads from Örslösarondellen in Lidköping to Tun and on to the Viggen rest area on Road 44. The route therefore offers both a road and a water perspective; its description connects Tun with a larger stretch along Lake Vänern.

The Vänerslingan is also described as a cultural route. Along the route, there are churches, museums, nature reserves, hiking trails, swimming spots, experiences and attractions to discover. This is a broad range of options for different travel interests, but it does not mean that each of these stops is located in Tun itself. Individual attractions and conditions may change, so take this into account when planning.

The landscape around Tun offers a different view of the region from the route: arable land and horse pastures characterise the surroundings of the church village, and Lake Vänern is nearby. If you want to combine an interest in nature and culture, you can consider this landscape as a distinct facet of your trip, alongside the historic sites and opportunities along the Vänerslingan.

From Bronze Age traces to the Elkvarn

Tun Church was built in 1846 on the same site as its medieval predecessor. The church site therefore points to a long building history at this location. Stenkullen near Tun offers another glimpse into the past: this Bronze Age burial mound is one of the largest in Sweden. It measures 60 metres in diameter and is seven metres high. These two measurements convey the mound’s exceptional scale without needing to compare it with other structures.

Many objects from the local area are preserved at Tun’s local heritage museum in Silvii skola. It also contains traces of the first people in the area. The museum thus offers a local perspective on history, while Stenkullen and the church each provide other historical points of interest. People have lived and worked in the area around Tun for several thousand years, and much of this history has been preserved there.

Tun’s Elkvarn also belongs to local history: it was built in 1913–1914 in connection with the electrification of Tunbygden. Taken together, the historical references span traces of the first people and the Bronze Age monument, the church’s medieval predecessor and a building from the period of electrification. Different periods therefore sit side by side in Tun, rather than the area being defined by just one era.

Getting active and finding your way around

The exercise trail in Tun starts at Tunets IP. A connecting path leads there from Tun’s built-up area. Check local conditions before setting out. The trail provides a specific point of reference for getting active, while the Vänerslingan, as a road and water route, offers a broader regional perspective. The main difference between the two options is whether you want to include a named starting point in the village or a route along Lake Vänern in your travel plans.
