Discover Mellby
Accommodation in Mellby
The ridge shapes the landscape of Mellby: the church and homes are located on or at the edge of the ridge. From there, the view extends east across open agricultural land towards the town. This combination of buildings, terrain and expansive landscape provides a helpful framework for choosing where to stay if you are planning a trip with a rural character.
Church architecture and earlier history
Mellby kyrka was built in 1879–1880 to designs by Oskar Eriksson. Its octagonal central plan arranges the building around a centre, with an openwork lantern above. A central plan directs the architecture towards a focal point, while the octagonal shape defines the floor plan. If you are interested in church architecture, these provide two concrete features that help describe the building’s form more precisely.
The present church building also belongs to a longer history of the area: it was preceded by a medieval church. That church stood in the old cemetery, 200 metres to the northeast. This makes it possible to distinguish Mellby’s churches by both period and location: the present church dates from the late 19th century, while its predecessor was medieval and stood elsewhere. The stated distance helps avoid conflating these locations into a single church site.
The furnishings also extend the historical perspective: Mellby kyrka contains a sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century. The building from 1879–1880 and an object from several centuries earlier can thus be seen side by side. When considering the church, it is worth looking at the building history and older furnishings separately; they point to different periods rather than describing a single phase of construction.
Runestone and local landscape
The runestone L1961:604 adds another dimension. Its inscription reads: “Gervar(?) reste stenen efter Toste(?), sin son. Tora(?) förde hit stenen.” The question marks indicate uncertain readings in the names given; retain them when reproducing the inscription rather than presenting the names with a certainty the text does not support. In 1969, the stone was re-erected, repainted and turned so that the inscribed side faces south. The inscription, re-erection and orientation offer different perspectives on the stone.
The layout of the buildings is also useful for finding your way around: most of the settlement lies west of the church, on both sides of the older road alignment and Road 2636. This makes it possible to use the church as a reference point for the main part of the settlement, while the ridge and the eastward view offer another perspective on Mellby. The buildings west of the church and the view east across the open land thus serve as two distinct orientation lines.
Roads and activities
The road network can also be understood by direction. Road 2636 through Mellby joins Road 44 to the northeast; at this point, Road 2599 from Lovene also meets Road 44. Westbound, the road passes through Mellby to Road 44, immediately east of Gillstad. These details provide orientation to the northeast and west. Check road conditions before travelling.
For a different kind of day out, an 18-hole disc golf course is located near Mellbyvallen. It adds a sporting touch alongside the cultural and historical themes and offers active travellers another specific point of interest when deciding whether to visit Mellby. Fees and operating details may change; check them before making plans.
