Landscape

Florarna, Uppland’s largest contiguous wetland area, is surrounded by extensive forests. There are open shelters where visitors can eat food they have brought with them or warm up; several are also suitable for overnight stays.

Water

Near the centre of Östhammar lies Krutudden, a nature-oriented recreation area offering opportunities for swimming, walking, barbecuing and playing beach volleyball. Kayaks and SUP boards can be rented at Krutudden to explore the water.

Trails

The 6 km Kulturstigen circular trail runs immediately outside Österbybruk, passing dams dating from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as traces of early iron processing. Karmdammen Runt is 2 km long and passes traces of historic iron processing, the so-called konstgången – a revolutionary power transmission system – and the Brunnshuset at the Dannemora healing spring. Harvikadammen runt follows the historic inspection path for the dam for 6 km and offers views of the dam as well as the surrounding wetlands and ponds. The 4 km Hälsans Stig circular trail in Östhammar marks every kilometre. The different trail lengths make it easy to weigh them up against one another.

Culture

Guided city walks in Östhammar convey the town’s history through its picturesque historic neighbourhoods. Kulturhuset Storbrunn houses a library, a cinema and a space for contemporary art. The venue also hosts cultural events and conferences. Mineralmuseet displays gemstones, fluorescent minerals, fossils, native lead and unusual stones from Greenland, the Kola Peninsula and Värmland. In summer, it offers mineral hunts for the public.

The guided tour of Österbybruk Manor conveys the centuries-old history of the ironworks and ends in the historic kitchen. A visit to Vallonsmedjan in Österbybruk is part of the guided tours. Forsmarks bruk is one of Sweden’s best-preserved listed historic buildings. Orangeriträdgården in Österbybruk includes an orangery and an 18th-century kitchen garden and is open to visitors year-round. Visit Forsmark features, among other things, an experimental workshop for children, a works museum, a café and guided bus tours around the power plant site.

Points of Interest

The farm shop at Fastbol Gård sells KRAV-certified beef, homemade jams and preserves, sausages, ice cream and other local products. Östhammar Municipality has several strategically located InfoPoints; a tourist office is open in Öregrund during the summer. Österbybruk can be reached by direct bus 823 from Uppsala or by taking the Upptåget and changing to bus 823 in Skyttorp.
