Discover Östhammar: History, Waterfront and Walking Trails
Östhammar combines more than 650 years of history with waterfront experiences, walking trails and cultural sites. If you are looking for a place with historic character and a range of options for your days, you will find both maritime history and experiences in the town area here.
Krutudden and trails for active days
Krutudden is a scenic recreational area located just a short walk from the centre of Östhammar, Sjötorget and the bus station. The area includes a child-friendly outdoor swimming facility with large lawns and a sandy beach. This makes Krutudden a clear focus for days outdoors, without requiring a long distance between several stops.
For a walk of manageable length, Hälsans Stig in Östhammar is a good choice. The route is 4 km long and easy to walk. This allows you to include a dedicated focus on physical activity in your trip without requiring additional destinations outside the town.
Town history to listen to and see
Östhammar’s history can be explored in various ways. The historic audio trail leads to seven locations with QR code signs. At each of these sites, you can listen to stories about the respective location. Those who would rather learn about the town’s development through a guided tour can book guided town walks in Östhammar to find out more about its history.
Kulturhuset Storbrunn also adds a contemporary touch: Around five exhibitions of contemporary art are shown in the art space each year. The cultural offering therefore ranges from historical stories in the townscape to current art in the exhibition space.
Buildings from different eras
Östhammars kyrka was inaugurated in 1675. For visitors with different requirements, it has an accessible entrance, an accessible toilet and a hearing loop.
Another glimpse into the past is Frösåkers Hembygdsgård. It comprises ten old buildings, most of which formerly stood in the centre of Östhammar. In summer, waffles are served at the Våffelstugan of Frösåkers Hembygdsgård, allowing a visit to be combined with a seasonal culinary stop.
Societetshuset Källör is particularly closely associated with the history of the waterfront. Together with a warm bath and a cold bath, it formed part of the Östhammar Havsbadanstalt. Construction of Societetshuset Källör began in 1885. Today, Källör is the last substantial building along the waterfront promenade that remains from Östhammar’s spa era as well as from its time as a trading and shipping town. Those interested in the development of the town will therefore find here a tangible historical connection between the spa, the waterfront promenade and its trading history.
