Öregrund – Wooden Town, Harbour and Coastal Nature

Öregrund combines a well-preserved historic town with coastal nature, bathing spots and maritime experiences. For your travel decision, this means you can plan your stay around walks through the old town, paths by the water, days at the beach or excursions into the archipelago. Several places reveal different sides of this Swedish coastal town.

Coastal Nature, Trails and Bathing Spots

One of the defining landscape experiences is Tallparken, a coastal nature park in Öregrund. Pine trees grow there on rocky ground, alongside smooth rocks, a small sandy beach and an extensive network of roads and trails. The area is also botanically remarkable: around 300 vascular plants have been recorded in Tallparken, including various herbs, shrubs and trees as well as several Red List species.

Tallparksbadet is a municipal bathing spot with a small sandy beach, rocks, a barbecue area and picnic tables. Along Öregrund’s waterfront promenade, the path leads to bathing rocks. Västerhamn offers another way to access the water: there, you can enter the water from the rocks; a bathing ladder makes getting in and out easier.

For a marked walk, Sjömilen is available, a 1,852-metre circular route around Hummelfjärden. The route passes a stream where fish swim upstream into Hummelfjärden to spawn in spring. The circular walk therefore combines the landscape with a seasonal natural event, without requiring you to commit to a longer hike.

Historic Town and Self-Guided Discoveries

Öregrund is one of the best-preserved wooden towns on the Uppland coast. Large parts of the old town have retained their character from the 18th and 19th centuries. Öregrund Cemetery is a characteristic town cemetery within the oldest part of the medieval town.

The history can be explored independently. The historic walking tour is a self-guided walk that passes 19 historic houses and sites and tells the story of the town’s development from the 17th century to the present day. You can complete the tour at your own pace and without a guide. An app also allows you to explore Öregrund as it was in 1626.

A prominent landmark is Öregrund Church. It was founded in 1491, after Öregrund had received town privileges and been required to build a church. Inside is a North German winged altarpiece from the mid-15th century, which was donated to the church in 1664. In addition, Öregrund’s Music Festival, featuring classical music, takes place every summer.

Harbour, Seafaring and Archipelago

The maritime history is particularly tangible around Öregrund’s Hembygdsgård, which includes a maritime museum. The Västra Banken lightship monument is also located at the Hembygdsgård. Wetsera, Sweden’s oldest still-sailing square-rigged ship, lies in Öregrund Harbour.

There are also specific starting points for days on the water. Excursions into the archipelago depart from Öregrund. Bo & Kajak rents out single and double kayaks as well as canoes for paddling in the Öregrund archipelago. A car ferry to Gräsö also departs from the harbour. Maritime culture, excursions and paddling trips are therefore all documented options in the area.
