Gimo – Knutmasso, Industrial History and Trails
Accommodation in Gimo
Gimo offers several distinct reasons to visit: the history of Gimo bruk, the Knutmasso tradition, a hiking trail and opportunities to enjoy the water. For planning your trip, it helps to keep these highlights separate: Knutmasso takes place on an annual festive day, Vallonstigen is a named trail, and Gimobadet is centred on its bathing area and recreational spaces. This lets you choose how to balance cultural history, outdoor activities and time for a swim. Gimo Herrgård adds a specific hotel and conference venue to the area’s attractions.
Historical Traces in Gimo
The history of Gimo bruk dates back to 1615. That was when the Crown had a forge for smelting iron built there. Gimo bruk is considered one of Sweden’s most cohesive manor complexes and, overall, one of the best preserved, both inside and out. Its historical significance makes the area interesting to travellers who want to combine early iron smelting with historic architecture.
Skäfthammar Church offers a different perspective. This late medieval parish church is in Gimo, Uppland. Its interior features rich wall paintings from the late 16th century, as well as Baroque furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Building history, wall paintings and furnishings from different historical periods come together here.
Knutmasso as a Reason to Visit
Knutmasso offers a different kind of cultural event. The celebration takes place in Gimo every year on Tjugondag Knut: participants dress up, and the carnival then proceeds along Bruksgatan. If this tradition is the main reason for your trip, take Tjugondag Knut into account when planning your dates and check the specific event date in advance.
The Knutmassomuseet, in the old Kvarnenhuset in Gimo, displays figures and masks from past Knutmasso celebrations. The playful family exhibition Knutmassomysteriet also explores Gimo’s Knutmasso tradition. Together, they offer a look at objects from the celebration and an exhibition format expressly designed for families.
Hiking, Swimming and the Indoor Pool
Vallonstigen is a 5 km hiking trail in Gimo, with information boards sharing facts about Gimo bruk. Vikingaleden and Upplandsleden also connect in Gimo. This gives you two distinct points of reference: a trail with a specified length and a connection between two routes.
Gimobadet, by Gimodammen, is a family-friendly bathing area with large lawns, jetties, a swimming jetty, barbecue areas and a ramp for people with reduced mobility. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit. Gimo simhall offers a different way to enjoy the water: it has two swimming pools close to a gym and a sports hall. When planning your day, you can choose between the bathing area and the indoor pool.
