Between the Ferry Crossing and the Archipelago

Gräsö combines a convenient ferry crossing with experiences of nature, swimming spots and cultural history. The ferry from Öregrund to Gräsö runs several times an hour. At the Äspskär landing stage, many day visitors use passenger boats to travel out into the archipelago. After the ferry crossing, Gräsöbadet on Gräsö is about 1 km to the north; there is a path for pedestrians and cyclists.

At Gräsöbadet, you can swim from the rocks and from a sandy beach. Kattskär also offers a clear connection to the sea: there, you can swim from the rocks, barbecue and enjoy the sea view. Those who would first like to view the landscape from above will find a wide view over the archipelago at Högklyksberget on the eastern side of Gräsö. The view from Högklyksberget and the sea view in Idöns naturreservat offer different perspectives: here, the view opens out over the archipelago, while there, open woodland and open grazing areas shape the landscape.

Church, Cultural Landscape and Local History

The present Gräsö kyrka was built in 1695–1697. The timber-built archipelago church has a beautiful 15th-century altarpiece, thereby connecting the local church architecture with a significantly older work of art. The year the church was built and the age of the altarpiece represent two different periods: the building dates from the late 17th century, while the artwork dates from the 15th century. The Västerbystigen offers another way of exploring the island’s history. The trail is about 1.5 km long; along the way, there is information about the landscape in the past and today.

The fields of Västerbyn on Gräsö preserve old field patterns, including cultivated islets and small areas of farmland crossed by ditches. They show how the agriculture of the archipelago population shaped the landscape over centuries. The Västerbystigen connects these field patterns with information about the landscape in the past and today. In addition, an art exhibition is held in summer at Anders Mats gården farm in Söderboda. Naturens Tempel is inspired by the biblical paradise.

Paths Through Pastures, Forest and Nature Reserve

Idöns naturreservat nature reserve lies in the south of Gräsön. There, the described landscape also includes views of the sea, open woodland, open grazing areas and signposted paths. At Gräsö gård, two circular trails of 1.7 and 3.5 km respectively lead through a large fenced area with flower-rich pastures and hilly woodland.

The season also adds a specific highlight: in May and June, the orchid Adam and Eve can be seen, among other places, in the pasture at Kostigen and at the beginning of the Kattskärsstigen. The information centre at Gräsö gård provides tips about other destinations on Gräsö. This makes it possible to choose swimming spots, short trails, natural areas and sites of cultural history according to their respective features, without treating the individual landscapes as identical.
