Norrtälje Among Archipelago Islands, Nature and Culture

Nature and Archipelago

Ängsö National Park is characterised by an archipelago landscape, meadows and pastureland, as well as mixed woodland, and is located in Norrtälje Municipality. Flower-rich meadows, paths through woodland and meadows, and a diverse birdlife are all part of the park, as are guided tours in spring and early summer.

Ängsö National Park can only be reached by boat. Options include private boats or kayaks, regular seasonal services from Stockholm or Furusund, and water taxis that can be booked. There are no accommodation options or restaurants in the national park; visitors should bring their own food, drinks and drinking water.

Birch groves, pastures, hazel woodlands and shore meadows alternate in and near Riddersholm Nature Reserve. There are walking trails, a bathing beach, a campsite, a hostel and a guest harbour there or nearby. The nature reserve can be reached by an SL bus from Tekniska Högskolan towards Norrtälje; after changing at Norrtälje bus station, continue towards Kapellskär to the Riddersholm stop.

Svenska Högarna Nature Reserve is Sweden’s largest marine nature reserve. It offers a species-rich marine environment and a barren outer archipelago landscape with bare rocks smoothed by the water. On Storön, there are several paths around Ytterhamnen, Innerhamnen and the lighthouse, as well as a Trojaborg, a stone labyrinth and a cemetery.

Trails and Water

On Singö, marked trails make it possible to visit beautiful parts of the island. Bus stops are located along the trail network on Singö and Fogdö, allowing visitors to take the bus to one stop and then walk back. The Roslagsbro–Kvisthamraviken canoe route is one of the canoe routes in Norrtälje Municipality.

Developed routes in Norrtälje Municipality run between Norrtälje and Rimbo, and between Rimbo and Rånäs. Stage 7 of the Roslagsleden trail from Penningby to Norrtälje is 16 kilometres long and passes historic sites such as Länna Church and a hillfort near Kyrksjön. From Kärleksudden, Roslagsleden follows a scenic waterfront promenade into central Norrtälje.

City and Culture

Å-promenaden is a cultural and historical walking trail along the Norrtäljeån from Lommaren to the river mouth at Norrtälje harbour. The trail is approximately 3 kilometres long and uses 37 signs to explain historic sites and the history of buildings. Å-promenaden also features recorded audio contributions with information narrated by actress Molly Malmros.

Vänligheten is a digital literary experience tour in Norrtälje based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist. The tour starts in front of Norrtälje City Library and takes visitors through the city with a mobile phone and headphones along a route lasting approximately 45 minutes.

Borgmästarholmen has designated barbecue areas and opportunities for walks through varied natural surroundings. At Vigelsjö Nature Reserve in central Norrtälje, five pétanque courts are available for visitors to use. At Färsna gård, visitors can go for walks, visit the animals and have a picnic in the countryside. There are 31 bathing sites in Norrtälje Municipality.

History

Wira bruk is a preserved historic cultural landscape and Sweden’s first blade forge. The Oldest House contains a museum, and a small café with outdoor seating is located by the Viraån.

Penningby Castle was built at the end of the 15th century and was a fortified castle in the Middle Ages. The original medieval character has been preserved on the two basement levels.
