Skebobruk combines the history of an ironworks with its location on Lake Närdingen. The preserved Bruksgatan, Skebobruks Museum and the opportunity to paddle on the lake each offer a different focus. Those interested in cultural history will find traces of the works’ development; those who want to spend time outdoors can explore the lake with a gentle paddle among small islands and islets. Historic buildings, exhibitions and waterside scenery offer different ways to experience the area.

Ironworks and historic buildings

Skebo Bruk was established as a modern ironworks in 1622 by Heinrich Lemmens. In the 1680s, Walloon blacksmiths introduced their production techniques at Skebo Bruk. The manor house at Skebo Bruk was built for Jacob Grill in 1770. These dates mark different stages: the establishment of the works, a change in production techniques and the later construction of the manor house. This makes it possible to place the history of production and the building history in their respective periods without reducing them to a single event.

The preserved Bruksgatan includes workers’ housing, a warehouse and an orangery dating from the time of the ironworks. Together with the manor house, these buildings show different aspects of the historic site: residential life, commercial use and representative architecture.

Museum and cultural experiences

The permanent exhibition at Skebobruks Museum presents the history of the ironworks. Themed exhibitions and talks offer deeper insights and explore additional topics. The museum offers groups guided tours of Bruksgatan, including the manor house and the forge. Group visits are arranged by booking.

The orangery is now a private home. In summer, its large hall and palm house host art exhibitions, literary discussions and theatre performances. As the summer programme and dates may change, check the schedule before making plans. Skebopuben’s stage is also part of the area’s cultural history: over the years, Swedish artists and many local bands have performed there.

Walk, lake and surroundings

The “En vandring i Schebo 1907” walk begins at the start of Brobyvägen, formerly known as Skolgatan, and passes through the old ironworks as they looked in the early 20th century. This focuses on a later historical period than the construction of the manor house in 1770: the emphasis is on how the works looked at the time. The specific starting point and the street’s former name give the walk a clear geographical and historical context.

Skebo Bruk lies on Lake Närdingen, which is connected to the sea via the Skeboån. Gentle paddling is possible on Närdingen, among small islands and islets along wooded shores. The Skeboån connects the lake to the sea; paddling takes place on Närdingen itself. The surrounding area also includes wooded slopes and forests. This means the site offers both a chance to explore history and an opportunity to enjoy the water, appealing to different interests.

Practical information

Skebobruk is accessible via Highway 76. As of 2026, the lower rooms and the other areas of Skebobruks Museum are accessible. There is a toilet at the museum, and the car park is less than 100 m away. Check these conditions before your trip.
