Discover Väddö

Väddö between canal paths, nature and culture

Väddö is particularly easy to get to know through specific experiences: walks and hiking trails by the water, wildlife observation in autumn, maritime history and sites of cultural and historical interest. By choosing your stay according to these interests, you can find several clearly distinct points of connection rather than just a single destination.

Observe nature and choose paths by the water

The Rönnskärs udde nature reserve is an important area for observing migrating birds in autumn. The small Väddö prästgård nature reserve, characterised by coniferous forest and featuring wet swamp-forest areas, is also located near Väddö. The two nature experiences have different focuses: one centres on seasonal birdwatching, while the other highlights the distinctive combination of coniferous forest and wet woodland.

There are several described options for walking along the canal. A hiking trail of around 4 kilometres follows the canal from Kaplansbacken at the Roslagen Maritime Museum to Bagghus. Stage 10 of the Roslagsleden trail begins at Bagghusbron and follows the Väddö Canal to Älmsta. In addition, a walking route follows the Väddö Canal from Älmsta in the north to Bagghus in the south. Depending on your preferred starting point, you can therefore focus on a shorter route or a stage of the long-distance trail.

Maritime history and sites of cultural and historical interest

The Roslagen Maritime Museum in Älmsta presents Roslagen’s maritime traditions from the Viking Age to modern ferry services. The time span thus extends from an early historical period to the history of ferry services. Väddö Church preserves four medieval sculptures from the old church, while a cultural and historical trail leads from Kista Hembygdsgård to a burial ground dating from the Late Iron Age.

Kista Hembygdsgård itself is a historic ensemble comprising 21 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the trail to the burial ground, this site is suitable for visitors who want not only to look at a single building but also to interpret historical traces in different forms.

Gardens, fika and local offerings

Kröns Trädgård is a garden centre on Väddö, just outside Älmsta. The site is easily accessible for wheelchair users and people using walking frames. Kröns Kök at Kröns Trädgård serves homemade fika. Another culinary destination is Farmor Marys Café at Väddö Gårdsmejeri, offering homemade ice cream, cheesecake, savoury pies, salads, cheese sandwiches and KRAV-certified coffee.

No advance booking is required during opening hours for the “Mingle with alpacas” activity; it is offered as a drop-in experience with staff present. This information is particularly useful if you do not want to plan a visit completely in advance.

Getting there and getting around

Väddöbygden can be reached by SL bus, car or your own boat. On site, Väddö’s winding roads offer opportunities for relaxing and adventurous cycling tours. This allows you to explore the region either via the described routes along the Väddö Canal or on an individual cycling tour.

Other places in the same overarching region are Hallstavik, Vätö, Grisslehamn, Herräng, Svanberga, Bergshamra, Skebobruk and Rånäs.
