Krummwisch: Hotels and Accommodations

Krummwisch combines a historic waterway with clearly defined paths through the landscape. The Königsförde lock and a section of the old Eider Canal can be explored in the village. The lock is one of the six chamber locks built to overcome the canal’s change in elevation. The lock and the neighboring wooden Dutch bascule bridge were restored between 1987 and 1988. Information boards at the lock provide walkers with information about this historic site.

History and Culture

Gut Groß Nordsee was first documented in the 13th century. The brickyard associated with the estate produced 8 to 10 million bricks annually during its historic operation. Today, Gut Groß Nordsee is used as an equestrian center. The Elysium Chapel was built on a small hill opposite Gut Groß Nordsee. Wilhelm Hirschfeld developed and operated Germany’s first drainage pipe press.

Hiking and Nature

A hiking trail near Krummwisch passes the Stoffsee Nature Reserve, an inland lake of approximately 14 hectares with wet meadows, fen plants, and opportunities for observing waterbirds. The hiking trail also includes crossing the historic drawbridge next to the Königsförde lock. The route from Krummwisch toward Heisch descends from around 20 meters above sea level into the valley of the former Alte Eider and crosses a bridge over the river.

Cycling

Rendsburg-Eckernförde district offers five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours, and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometers in length. Krummwisch is listed among the towns and villages along the Kiel Canal Route. This route runs mainly along well-maintained paths as well as quiet country and farm roads. Along the route, cyclists and pedestrians can use the service roads along the canal to shorten the distance.
